Issue - adding multiple files to playlist using context menu causes each to open in a new window

Using Win10 1803 updated to date. Using VLC 3.0.3. However, I have noticed this issue since earlier Windows (8) and VLC versions.
When I choose multiple files and choose "Add to VLC' media player's playlist", each file opens in its own window, so if I choose 10 mp3 files, each will open in a new window and start playing immediately, resulting in a cacophony...not to mentions the amount of resources taken up in one go that sometimes freezes the system.
The only way I have found around it is to add a folder to playlist rather than individual files inside a folder, but then the issue here is if I want to selectively play a few files from the folder. In that case, I have to add one file, then drag and drop the others in that playlist window. So I was wondering if this is a design decision or am I missing out on some setting that would add all the selected files to the same new playlist.
