Cannot play Insta Pro video samples

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 18:06
by FL53
Hi,

I tried to play Insta Pro video samples (https://www.insta360.com/product/insta360-pro) with VLC 3.0.3 and it failed for 8Kand 6k3D, it only plays 4K 3D video. Is there any way to make VLC play this kind of file ?
Best regards,

Hi,
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

As requested, paste the full resulting log, from the very beginning to the very end.

Also please upload a short sample of a problematic file to either Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
100 MB max should be enough.

Hi, it looks like decoding is done by software (avcodec) and is lagging. maybe your pc is just too slow to decode 8K/6K video$

Hi,

I am a bit late to answer ... but did not see your posts before ( ouh ! :( ... I though I subscribed with mail notification ... but no).
I should be able to decode with my hardware (1070 GPU and i7 CPU). I redo the full log and send it to you tomorrow (EDIT : or today ;) ).
Thank you for your help.

Here is the full resulting log. Is using avcodec again ! How can I force hardware decoding ?
The sample used is the insta pro sample (can be downloaded here. It is the TEST_6K3D.mp4 file)

Did you ever get an answer to this? I am surprised to find that the default Win 10 video player can play my InstaPro 360 One X files just fine, but VLC does the flickering you're talking about. Given I have an i9 with 16 gigs ram and an nVidia RTX 2070, I'm thinking it's not a hardware issue :-)

Sure. Have a 78k log file. How do I attach to this or publish so you can read it? FWIW, all my other video files work fine, it's just these...

I suspect the germane part (however) is:

We need all the logs, in verbosity 2, before you start it :)

I got the same issue when playing Insta360 Pro videos (360 video in 8K) on Windows 10. Please download the log file here (verbosity set to 2).

Specs: GTX1060, i7, 16GB

Note: on my Macbook Pro the same videos are playing fine in VLC. It's just VLC on Windows 10 that is having issues to play the videos (black flickering screen with audio).

Would be great if this can be fixed.

Your logs that that your GPU is out of memory, and cannot decode those 8K samples.

dxva2 error: IDirectXVideoAccelerationService_CreateSurface 23 failed (hr=0x8876017c)

But it should go back to software decoding then.

Code: Select all

direct3d11 debug: Direct3D11 Open Succeeded main debug: using vout display module "direct3d11" main debug: removing module "direct3d11" direct3d11 debug: Direct3D11 resources destroyed
Unfortunately it goes through an error path that has no log. Not sure what happened. It opened the module successfully and the core was happy with it. I think it may be due to the decoder pool allocation that fails early without a log.

It says 6 GB, not 16 (which would be a lot on a laptop or even in general). I think it's a memory size issue. In 4.0 we will less memory to do the same decoding. But huge files like this will always have problems on some config.

On my laptop the video is playing fine while it contains an inferior graphics card (GT 750M 2GB) so I guess it's not a memory size issue. It's VLC on my desktop running Windows 10 that is having issues to play the video.

The GTX1060 in my desktop has 6GB. The 16GB I mentioned earlier is the amount of RAM in my desktop.

I concur that it probably isn't an issue of the memory card having enough memory given that I can play my files using Windows Movie Player on my desktop with a GTX 2070 with 8 Gigs of VRAM, but not with VLC. Just seems odd that for this one type of file I can't use VLC, but wouldn't be surprised if they are using something that gets installed when you setup the Studio program which VLC won't use.

Can you run dxvachecker on your machine, btw, and share a screenshot?
Sure, you can download the screenshot here.

That should decode 8K, then.

Yes, with VLC 4.0, I believe we will be able to.
