As a workaround, could you try to go to:
- Tools -> Settings
- Select "All" (in the lower left corner)
- Input / codecs ->Video Codecs -> FFmpeg
- Set "Threads" to 1

Wow, this fixed it, but I am curious what was causing the problem.

Thank you very much!

My system:
Windows 10 (b17134), I7-4770, 16GB RAM, GPU: GTX960

Hi,
I've got the same problem: a .mp4 video showing a black screen or only the same frame (after several seconds of black screen).

Setting the prefs: Input / codecs ->Video Codecs -> FFmpeg -> Threads to 1, makes the video playing correctly.

If played correctly, the video consists of 23 stills that are showed over a period of 16 seconds.

I tried VLC 3.0.3 and also the latest (4.0.0) nightly build (both tried after resetting the prefs by removing the %appdata%/Roaming/vlc directory).

The video is freely available at U.S. Geological Survey: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatorie ... e-2405.mp4
(I tested a local copy)

My problem was a bit different - movie played back at correct speed but it was stuttery (lots of dropped frame). Good luck in solving your problem.

I still have no idea why changing threafs from 0 to 1 fixed the problem.

Help. This workaround did not fix my issue using vlc 3.0.3 playing a 10bit hevc video.

Additional information: Using the workaround makes other video files looks like the Image snapshot so i have to revert to Thread = 0 to play them back normally.

any tweaks i need to do or is it even possible to play the video using my system?
or direct me in the correct thread? :cheers:

What are you driver versions ? Can you try with a 3.0 nightly build from here ? https://nightlies.videolan.org/build/wi ... 0717-0549/

this one? all driver are up to date.

Installed the nightlies build but still the same.

Setting: Default (normal .mp4 .mkv working fine)

Settings: Thread = 1 (normal .mp4 .mkv not working)

I'm experiencing this same problem, tried all solutions here and updated drivers for Windows 10 64, GTX 970, Intel i3. Video is choppy, frames drop, CPU is 70-80% (GPU is 4-8%), here are my debug logs https://pastebin.com/X61dfUqz

If I set my "threads" to 1 then everything is smooth for the first 10 seconds and then the video just stops (freezes) while audio continues to play.

Hi everyone.. I fixed my problem now.. everything works on every format..

- Tools -> Settings
- Select "Simple" (in the lower left corner)
- Inputs/Codec (top Right) - > Codecs -> Hardware-accelerated decoding
- from "Automatic" change it to "direct3D11 Video Accerelation"

image: https://i48.servimg.com/u/f48/11/43/03/97/workin10.png

no more greenish video...
