VLC remembers previous directory -> Subtitle problem

For all my videos subtitles are in the same folder as the video.
With the new VLC version (3.0.3) I was first excited about all your improvements, because I am used to VLC being a perfect and hassle-free program. But now it is clear that you have applied a design flaw:
Whenever I open a video and want to add subtitles, VLC automatically looks for subtitles in the last used folder. Which is often a long way from the folder for the video now playing.
I have found out that I can drag and drop my subtitles from the folder I am presently in directly into the window. But I think that "Add subtitle" should by default start in the same folder as the video (as it has been until now), and that it should also be possible to set this in the preferences menu. Which it isn't. I've tried changing autodetection fuzziness to 1, 0 and disabling it entirely, but whatever I do, VLC now insists on opening the last used folder.
This is a terrible design error, and clearly a bad decision made in the process of creating the new version.
Please change it back to "use present video folder as default to look for subtitles" - as it has always been - a.s.a.p.
Cheers
