SOLVED: black screen after 3.0.3 vetinari update
Posted: 03 Jun 2018 20:50

after the update yesterday to the 3.0.3 vetinari version my screen suddenly turns completely black when trying to play .mp4 and/or mkv files;
avi files seem okay (as is the audio btw)
verbosity[2 debug] eror says "main debug picture is too late to be displayed" (with various ms)
by deselecting "video adjust" i do get the video though
any ideas?
thanks !

Video adjust makes hardware decoding too slow on your computer. You need to disable either of them.

Please consider me a noob but in the preferences I find neither "Video adjust" nor "Hardware Decoding"
My screen is also a lovely shade of black

Well... whatever did change in this version since it worked perfectly well before i updated? And how about explaining a proper workaround because i can't find any of those settings either.

sorry, should read "IMAGE adjust"
(deselect "image adjust" via "show extended settings" [icon on vlc lower taskbar] -> video effects -> "image adjust")
if Remi is right shouldn't that be the default option ?

Remi was completely right:
I changed (via tools -> preferences -> input/codecs ->) hardware-accelerated decoding from automatic to disable
and now everything is just dandy (no more need to constantly deselect image-adjust),
thanks for helping an(other) ignoramus out !

Indeed, set hardware-accelerated decoding from automatic to disabled (via tools -> preferences -> input/codecs ->) solves the issue after update to 3.0.3 Vetinari.
A shame the development team didn't set this to default in the update, but hey....: we all make mistakes and this is only a small one.

A lot of videos will not play properly without decoding hardware acceleration. This is much more fatal than losing gamma correction.
So disabling it by default is not very viable. There is no perfect default here.

before you start the playback to:
- Open: Tools -> Messages.

- Start playback to reproduce your issue
- Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
- Then paste the full resulting log here between
and
(or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your
Operating System and provide the
VLC media player version.

I'm curious if you guys could provide some assistance. I am finding that VLC will only give audio and not display video for my H265 4k HDR videos. I have tried the above fixes with no success. When I attempted to generate a log, no errors were found. I'm currently running an Intel 3930k and a Radeon 290. The CPU is not struggling at all even if I unselect hardware acceleration. Is this a hardware limitation somewhere due to the age of the processor/video card?
Thank you

Hi,
@NonToxic628: it might be easier to create a new subjet. Either way, are you turning debugging logs in the message window, before starting the video ? It might not be an error.
Your hardware looks quite old for this kind of playback.
@moronicsmurf: can you provide the full logs ?

You're trying to play 4K HEVC, but your GPU cannot decode it. So it's not in software. Which is pretty much impossible in realtime. That's why you see only black, no frame is ever decoded in time to be displayed.

So is there a way to force the CPU to decode instead, or am I in the same boat with the 3930k?

"So it's not in software" -> "So it is in software". It's is the CPU decoding, but it's too slow for such a large video.

Ok thanks. Its interesting because the CPU isn't really turning up when I try to run one of these files. The utilization is sitting around 12% and that is with some other stuff going on in the background. I may just need to buy a new videocard and offload the processing to it as the 3930k has done everything else I have asked it to without any issues.
