Chinese subtitle (SRT-files) .. which format or encoding for VLC?

Hello

I use VLC 3.0.0 Vetinari.
I've several chinese movie-files .. with external chinese subtitles-files (SRT).

The text-subtitles-files (SRT-files) have different format/encoding... UTF-8, GB2312 (Simplified) .. etc.

BUT VLC doesn't always show/accept these chinese subtitle files.
Sometimes VLC shows "garbage" .. sometimes VLC shows readable chinese subtitles.
Which encoding/format of the subtitle-file does VLC accept?
Thank you.

Thank you.
After converting the encoding to UTF-8 .. then VLC displays the readable chinese subtitles .. and not the garbage.
Only the format-changing was not easy!

For simplified Chinese, you should usually select GB18030.

@Rémi Denis-Courmont

I use PSPad & notepad++ text-editor to convert the encoding.
But both editor don't have/know GB18030.
How (with which software) do you convert to GB18030?
Thank you.
