Subtitles stop auto-reopening after upgrade to 3.0.2

Postby depesz » 02 May 2018 21:42

I have a laptop wit some windows (7 I believe) that I use as source for projector. It's taking video files over mounted samba share.

I am currently using 2.2.8 and all works OK (well, there are some problems with video, but they are irrelevant for me).

Due to some talk, I upgraded to 3.0.2 and it stopped auto-opening subtitles. I have to go to subtitle menu, and click "add subtitle file" and then it works. Names for subtitle files are the same as video file, but with .txt extension.

I checked, on the same videos on 2.2.8, and it works OK.

So - am I missing something? Should I change/set something so that it will auto-open the subtitles?

I think automatic opening of TXT files has been removed.
You should use regular subtitles files, e.g. .SRT files.

Well, converting the files *is* an option, though I'd prefer something easier.

Given that I can open the subtitle manually, it seems that there is still support for reading them and guessing internal format. Is it literally not possible to get it to load automatically?

IMHO, wrong design decision - people do use .txt and will switch over to a different player thinking that VLC is buggy because it cannot load subtitles.

People also use .txt for what it's meant: plain text. Matching it as subtitle format leads to a lot of false positives.
