VLC 0.8.4a: problems with MKV (matroska) files

VLC, in general, has problem playing MKV files (matroska)
(related also to this thread)

0.8.4 test 3: audio runs smoothly, video hangs after a few frames; then VLC crashes
0.8.4 test 2: the file is not played, the bar just reach its final point in a few seconds
0.8.2: just the audio is played. if I disable->re-enable the video from the menu, I can see a few frames, then VLC crashes.

I guess this problems should be handled properly, and a fix made.

[edit: 0.8.4a was released but no way that the problem's over]

Ditto here too. MKV files I just downloaded.. one an anime movie, another some seriesed anime, they both have audio but no video and crash the player shortly after starting.

add: and requiring caps without saying so on the comf code = gay. ^^

tried. with the same negative result! :?

isn't there any workaround? why does it happens? hasn't support for mkv's been tested enough?

...i was watching anime series...crashed within like 5 mins within the episode, it kind've slowed down or grainy in a few frames den notice comes up...gave me dat error notice...something with da DrWatson DeBugger...i think it might be dat...i dunno really...

...dis is the same problem with the previous VLC version and stil da same problem occurs...sigh...why release new version when the same problem has not been solved?...

that's what I wonder myself..

anyway, there's an annoying but with playing mkv files. try the following

1) open an mkv file
2) the video won't run, just the audio..so (I'm traslating, my gui is in Italian) Video -> video trace -> disable
3) re-enable it --> VLC will crash :?

can you reproduce that, guys?

I hope this will be fixed in the close future!

i still have this issue too, so for now i still have to switch to 0.8.1, and that seems to play all my .mkv files no problem. pants solution i know, but better than none, for people who just run accross the problem.

You guys are watching AVC matroska, and that was all still very experimental at the time your movie files were created. Not all methods survived the initial support.

btw. please upload a sample to ftp://streams.videolan.org/incoming
We will check, but most likely the movie files you are trying were incorrectly encoded with a too old version of the matroska muxers. Several issues have been fixed in matroska muxers regarding AVC over the past months.

(If you play with fire [new codecs] prepare to get burned)

thank you, The DJ.

on that ftp I can already see some mkv files, anime (jap) movies, those beginning with [Shinsen-Subs]; I guess my mkv files might be encoded like those ones.

tonight I'll try and upload one of my files, though.

Matroska Files

I can't help asking the stupid question! If the problem as you perceive it to be AVC (h.264) files muxed in the MKV container, then why when you pull the files out of the container do they play?? Every file I have tried this with does play within VLC.

Seems this rather proves the problem is with Matroska within VLC not the experimental h.264 or should I say x.264. Also it can be noted that these same files play outside of VLC using Matroska's ax files. Thus eliminating the possibility of corrupted files.

Hope this is helpful

Dude, I feel you haven't read carefully what The DJ posted....

It's kinda obvious that the files will play if you de-mux then, as they seen to be badly muxed in the first place. Or at least that's what I could understand.
How about re-muxing the files with a new version of the matroska muxers? (mkvtoolnix with mkvmerguegui or something)
Ok, so if you have already backed up the files on cd/dvd it's a pain in the neck to copy the file to the hd and give it a go, plus if it works, you'll have to re-burn that files, etc. But it would still nice if you tryed.
I've never downloaded myself any file with h.26* encoded video :P

I've got a couple of .mkv video files that i could watch perfectly with VLC 8.2 but that won't work with 8.4a though, they just crash the player...why's that?

I have had issues with Mkv Files with the official releases of VLC. I found that by downloading a nightly versionone it fixes the problem. I have no problem with any .mkv files.
