Flickering Green When Playing DVDs

Postby Piedmont Jim » 23 Mar 2018 03:56

System:
Windows 7 64 bit. It's an older i7 with an above average dual core video processor and 8Gb of RAM. It's not top of the line by today's standards, but certainly sufficient for HD video playback.

Problem:
Within the past few weeks VLC has started flickering green when playing DVDs. It's not constant, but intermittent. It goes through spells where the entire playback area with the viewer at any size will flicker between green and the video. Then it stops for a minute or so and then starts flashing again. The sound is unaffected when it's flashing.

Further observations:
I do some video editing on this PC and have a few different players. No other player I have has this issue; only VLC. For playing various digital video files, VLC does just fine. Only when playing a DVD does it do this. I just got notification of an update today and hoped it would restore this function. However, after the update, it still exhibits the same behavior. VLC has been one of my better players so I'd like to see if there's a setting or something I don't know about that would cause it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello,

- what version of VLC do you use? did you try with vlc 3.0?
- could you try with a different video output, in preference -> video -> output (try dx9, dx11)
- does it happens with every DVD or only some? if so which ones? does it happens with other videos?
- Could you provide some logs? (tool -> messages, set verbosity to 2, *then* start playing your media)

Same flickering problem 3.0.3. Closing Vlc and reopening makes it go away temporally. Sometimes just pausing for 10 seconds or so will return it to normal. Windows 7/64, Kaby Lake, NVIDA GeForce 1060 3gb

Change video output to Direct3D9 in preferences.

Turning Video/Deinterlace from automatic to off fixes the flickering green for me, so far...
Switching-off the deinterlacing works for us too but setting to Direct3D9 had no effect (so is left to AUTO).

The strange thing is that the issue has only just materialised for us but on only one of our two laptops.

As a precaution we have clean installed VLC 3.0.6 Vetinari: old VLC uninstalled, preferences and cache deleted on removal and reinstall. This did not have any effect though.

One of the laptops needs the deinterlacing to be switched OFF, the other one doesn't and can be set to AUTO or ON.

The platform which runs okay with the deinterlacing set to AUTO or ON is:-
HP Elitebook 2530p
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel Core2 Duo/Centrino 2 L9400 @ 1.86GHz
4GB RAM

The platform which requires deinterlacing to be switched-OFF is:-
Dell N5110
Windows 7 Home Premium
Pentium dual core B940 @ 2.00GHz
4GB RAM

Hope this helps.

Under Tools>Preferences>Input/Codecs disable Hardware-accelerated Decoding. It's the first option. Then close and reopen VLC.

You can stop VLC media player from flickering green by opening VLC media player on your computer, going to tools, then go to preferences, then select Input/Codecs, and disable hardware-accelerated decoding

Hi, i have the same problem. the green flickering starts for about 30 seconds whenever there is a chapter break on a dvd. i have no other issues with any video file on my computer, streamed, or played from a thumb drive. i also have no problems with anything that has been burned onto a CD.

I have tried various video and codec settings mentioned in the thread here and nothing appears to be helping. the only thing that sort of works is turning off the deinterlace, which helps for whatever episode i'm watching, but the flickering starts again on the next episode and i have to shut down vlc, reopen vlc, turn deinterlace back on, then off again, then reload the dvd, and start the next episode.

i would very much like to just binge watch a few episodes before bed without having to fuss.

I am not very tech savvy so please bear with me for trouble shooting. i also hate downloading stuff i already own and i would love a solution to this problem.

thnx in advance.

some possibly pertinent info: using vlc 3.0.7.1 vetinari. comp is a custom build running window 7 professional, 64 bit OS. video card is nvidia GTX 680.

I tried everything in this thread, trying to get mine to stop to no success. Using version 3.0.8, windows. I fixed the problem by turning off Deinterlace in the video toolbar. Super easy fix, so it kind of caught me off guard. Hope this helps, Future People.

I've had the green flickering on my Windows 7 PC for two 2005 DVDs. I don't have it on my Windows 10 computer. For the old computer, I tried the input/codes suggested below, but nothing changed. However, when I changed the Video/Deinterface from automatic to disable, that solved it. I was really glad to read about this because the old computer has a better monitor and better speakers and yes, I could switch those to the Windows 10 computer. The W10 monitor is larger. I need to do some research about the Bose speakers on the W10 and maybe make a call to see why the sound is so muffled. But, bottom line for this forum subject, I found VLC repairable and am thankful for the suggestions.
