Vlc can't find chromecast

I have a problem in 3.0.1 vetinari.
Open VLC, go to Playback, renderer, and there it has local and scanning, this doesn't change.
I can stream from chrome, airflow, YouTube videostream etc.
Running Win 10 with defender firewall with exception in for vlc player. 360 total security. Have tried to disabling both defender and 360 but vlc is stuck on "scanning".
Same WiFi, Netgear DEVg2020. just cant work out what is wrong when everything else works.
Tried a nightly build vlc 4 same issue, Vlc 4 did bring up a security certificate which I cant remember vlc 3 doing.
Cheers for any help, must be something simple hopefully.

I have the same problem. I then installed the videostream plugin Chrome to get a substitute for VLC. When I first tried using videostream, it told me that I had windows 10 firewall problems and it asked me to download a fix file that would open some ports in my firewall. TCP port 5556 and 5558 if you want to do it yourself. After running the fix, videostream started working perfectly. But also my Chromecast now shows up in vlc, but unfortunately when I choose the Chromecast in vlc the vlc-screen goes black on the computer and I get no signal through the Chromecast.
This doesn't seem to fix your problem, but hopefully it will get you one step closer to a fix.
My next step is to completely uninstall vlc 3.0.1, remove it from Windows defender and reinstall now that the videostream fix has been applied.
And maybe I'll try your nightly build vlc4. Do you have a link btw?
Let me know if it works out for you.

Sort of the same here, VLC stuck at 'Scanning...' and it's greyed out. Only option is 'Local'.
I had it working for a few days, until I restarted the computer due to Windows update. Haven't been able to establish connection between VLC and Chromecast since. Both computer and Chromecast are on same WLAN, both on 5 GHz.
Is there any way to force VLC to scan or manually input the IP of the Chromecast?

I have the same problem, VLC is stuck on "Scanning..."
However, it did work the very first time I installed VLC v3. I haven't been able to make it work again after that (even after doing a fresh VLC install and making sure VLC is authorised in the Windows firewall).
Other software that use chromecast work fine. (Youtube, Videostream etc.)
Thank you

I have the exact same problem, except it has never worked for me (this is the first time I try casting with vlc)... Has anyone found a solution?

Folks, same problem here, but it only occurred recently. Was working fine until a few weeks ago.
Windows 10
VLC 3.0.4 Vetinari
Pioneer VSX-832 A/V Receiver with integrated Chromecast
When I click Playback --> Renderer it only gives me "<Local>". Until a few weeks ago it also gave me the name of my A/V Receiver so I could stream to it. Did work perfectly fine. Some weeks ago I updated to VLC 3.0.4 (I think last version I had in use before that was 3.0.2, but not sure). I also tried falling back to version 3.0.2 but to no avail. I still can't see my Chromecast.
Streaming with WMP works fine, so it's not an issue with the Receiver.
VLC is allowed on Windows Firewall, so I guess that's not the issue.
Any ideas?

I had that grey "scanning..." issue. I used to conect my PC via Ethernet while Chromecast is connected via Wireless. I decided to connect the PC via Wireless and "bingo" the Chromecast came up in the list. I changed the connections back to the original configuration and the Chromecast is still there. It might disapper again after a compuyter restart...
I still have a problem though: VLC do not cast a subtitle file along with a local movie streaming. Any tip...?

Well this happened to me more than one time, i works for a while then all of the sudden it stops,
my solution that always work is I click on Connect from the windows notifications icons,
then find other type of devices,
(https://ibb.co/SfhY6tc)
as you can see in the above image "the living room" is the name of my Chrome cast, if u don't have your chrome-cast listed there just click on "Add Bluetooth or other devices" and select everything else and your windows will find it and add it, then you can again enjoy Casting to it,
every-time VLC stops seeing the chrome-cast, come to this menu and delete the existing chrome-cast and add it again, i know this sounds stupid but it always works for me and hope the same to you.

WORKED!!!
I have been able to cast to Chromecast from vlc for months (after having tried for months before, without success, as soon as the first v.3 came, but suddenly it worked), but after some major changes in my network setup, I wanted to cast from vlc again. Casting from Chrome worked fine. But with vlc it didn't work, in 'renderer' there was only the 'local' option, it was scanning and it was greyed out.
Stumbled over this thread from Google Search and took a look at the last post from yalhinnawi (image was gone, but tried the ulr with it - and my Kaspersky went wild!), so I had an idea, where he was at.
With minor changes in proceedings, I did the following:
Open Windows Settings > Devices/Bluetooth & other devices > scroll down to the list of 'Other devices' and remove every entry, resembling the Chromecast name. So I didn't have to add it again, as yalhinnawi says, he has done.
Just casted something from vlc, and it hasn't appeared on the list of 'Other devices' again.
I had three entries, named after the room, I used when I set up the Chromecast. Removed all of them, did nothing else, just went back to vlc, and - voila - there it was again! Right away, without having to wait for vlc to scan. While I did all this, I was casting Prime Video to the Chromecast from the app on my mobile phone...

Same for me , but I am running VLC 3.0.9 on a Linux Mint 20.2 x86_64 It does not seem to be an OS issue.
Strange enough, it runs perfectly on a Raspberry pi400 Ubuntu 21.04 aarch64 / Raspberry Pi 400 Rev 1.0 VLC3.0.12
Both machines are connected via WIRE (not WiFi) on the same switch but the first one has NO wifi card

use:
netsh wlan show profiles
choose and then delete the apropriate profile:
netsh wlan delete profile name="my_profile_to_delete"
connect to the network one more time, remember your network password.
in my case i got the chromecast visible in vlc.
