VLC 3.0.1 H.265 Video freeze, audio keeps playing

Posted: 10 Mar 2018 00:25
by Mandula
Hi guys.
I have a serious problem with VLC 3.0.1 64-bit. I'm trying to watch an 1080p H265 HEVC mkv file, but the video track freezes randomly and I can't get it working again (just by killing the process and starting again). While the video freezes, the playback keeps on going and I can hear the audio track without problems. It usually happens 0,5-2 minutes in (after hitting Play). It happens on all my HEVC mkv files, so they aren't corrupt or anything. I have hw-accelerated decoding on Auto. It's a serious problem - I can't watch any of my H265 files. My specs: Intel i5-3210M, 8GB RAM, 2x GT650M 2GB in SLI, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

You need a graphics card with HEVC hardware acceleration which the GT 650M doesn't have.

Hmm.. fair enough, but does it really explain the completely RANDOM freeze? There are NO problems with the playback whatsoever until it freezes and stops showing new video frames. I'm not convinced. I had NO PROBLEMS with HEVC with VLC version 2, just saying.

Have the same problem, only that video frames come back after a while and then freeze again.

Tried with 3.0.0 and 3.0.1. Reverted back to 2.2.8 which never gave me any problems with any of my media files. I have a Nvidia 980m which does support HEVC, so I don't think that this is the problem you have.

Yep, you're right, 1920*1080 should play with a modern CPU even without hardware acceleration.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also please upload a short sample of a problematic file to either Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

I have the same issues with VLC 3.0.1.

Problem: After around 2 min, the video freeze but audio keeps playing. Sometimes, the video won't freeze, but it will flicker constantly for 1 sec throughout certain parts of the video.
My Specifications: i5 6500 CPU with Intel 530 Graphics, 16GB Ram, Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
VLC Settings: All settings on default for both 2.2.8 and 3.0.1 including Video output Auto

It only happens to certain HEVC videos but the video which caused flickering on VLC 3.0.1 plays fine in VLC 2.2.8 64bit, MPC-HC, WMP and Films & TV so I doubt it's the video issue.

Please try VLC 3.0.2 for that.

Please try VLC 3.0.2 for that.
Tried the latest 3.0.2 nightly, video still freezes on a frame.

So I just noticed the same problem not to long ago. I'm pretty sure it only happens on HEVEC encoded videos. I started playing around with different setting to fix the freezing but nothing seemed to help. I worked my way back down to version 2.2.8 and no problems what so ever. So something changed after version 2.2.8 that is causing some kind of problem with the video freezing every so often. I am not a programmer by any means so not sure what happened after that version.

I have/had the EXACT same problem.

The only solution was to go to Tools>Preferences>Video and set 'Output' to Automatic.

I had it set to OpenGL, which to me is VERY important because I play games and always have a paused minimized video. If it's not set to OpenGL, starting a game almost always closes VLC, which loses my place in the video, or (rarely) a game will crash on startup.

I've been using VLC since 2009/2010, and have always found it perfect. But this one thing has always bothered me, because even setting it to OpenGL, I lose the on-screen Display when switching to fullscreen on certain video formats. I imagine there MUST be a way to make VLC and any game run simultaneously. It is 2018.....

Registered just to say this exact thing is still happening in the latest version Oct/23/2018. It didn't happen a year ago. However, I can get video playing again by seeking back a few seconds, but it happens very often, so it's not worth the effort.
Windows media player runs x265 better than VLC right now. This has been my only major problem with VLC in recent memory.

Has anyone found a solution to this issue, still happens with 3.0.4 where h.265 video will freeze every few minutes while audio continues to play. This issue requires you to use the seek bar to go back a few seconds to get the video playing again for another few minutes.

Had the same issues with vlc 3.0.4 and changing under

Tools -> Preferences -> Video

turned Output "Automatic" to "Open Gl Video output"

did actually the trick for me, I hope it does the same to you

This issue still exists in VLC 3.0.6.
I can confirm that changing the output from "Automatic" to "OpenGL" solved it for me. Thank you.

The "OpenGL" trick did not work for me, but disabling hardware acceleration solved the problem.
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=146042

Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs -> Hardware acceleration decoding -> DISABLE

The problem seems to be in the driver, because even if vlc uses the hardware acceleration, the driver slow down the GPU frequency, causing the problem (tested with afterburner, gtx 980, drivers updated).

This is still happening. Reverting to 2.2.8 works perfectly and flawlessly. Edit: other than for the sake of security I see no reason to use any newer version, performance in 2.2.8 is fine, for me it is at least.

I dont see any difference in performance by downgrading to 2.2.8, except for the fact that h265 videos works perfectly in 2.2.8 while freezing constantly in the newer versions. I don't know exactly what version is the dividing line, but I do know that 2.2.8 works really well.

I understand and agree with you on the security issue, that's a good point that I did not consider in previous comment. Though imho it's worth the risk to be able to play h265 properly, that freezing issue is disgusting.

Also having problems to stream from my sat receiver to my PC. Used to work some time ago.
The problem may be re-introduced while update the VGA driver or VLC.

Picture freezes after a second or so. But works fine if I disable HW accel. completely. But then the CPU load is 30% and GPU load 40%.

How do I attach the log file? Because direct pasting exceeds character limit.

EDIT: OK, found out about Pastebin in another Thread. Here is the log https://pastebin.com/dqaChAqt

Currently using 3.0.7.1 on Win10 with GTX1070ti

Hi,
I have problems playing hevc h.265 movie on my VLC 3.0.8. The movie freezes after few seconds, then it is covered by some grey veil. When I open the same movie with the Windows 10 built in film + tv player, it works well.
My GPU is GTX 980M, GPU is i7-6700HQ 2,6GHz.

This is what I get in VLC message:
direct3d11 error: SetThumbNailClip failed: 0x800706f4
chain error: Too high level of recursion (3)
main error: Failed to create video converter
direct3d11 error: SetThumbNailClip failed: 0x800706f4
main error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late (pts_delay increased to 300 ms)
avcodec error: avcodec_send_packet critical error
direct3d11 error: SetThumbNailClip failed: 0x800706f4

I tried many of the settings suggested in this forums but nothing helps.

Please can you try to help me?
Thanks.

I have been monitoring this issue. Just wanted to let others know that the issue seems solved in VLC 3.0.8 (not so up to 3.0.7.x).
