VLC 0.8.4-test3 beta release /!\ Win32 Audio output testing
Posted: 22 Nov 2005 23:35
by dionoea
I'll keep it simple:
This test release is intended to test a directx audio output fix. We would appreciate if you could test two configuration settings :
1/ Use the directx audio output with "Use float32 output" disabled (this should be this release's default setting)
2/ Use the directx audio output with "Use float32 output" enabled
We plan on releasing 0.8.4 final really soon (read: in 1 or 2 days) so rapid feedback would really be appreciated (espacially from nforce users).
You can download this test version here:
ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/tes ... st3/win32/
May the force be with you,

ok, but it works fine using directx s16l ? (the fl32 thing seems to be driver bug with nforce hardware ...)

what about this folder on the ftp?
http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/video ... 8.4/win32/
it seems to keep the 0.8.4 version of VLC
is that possible?

Well, we were in the process of doing 0.8.4 when gibalou find a fix for the s16l/fl32 directx problem, so we thought it was worth a test3 to have feedback from the users. 0.8.4 will arrive very soon.
So this folder is not official yet and shouldn't be used

so, the files in the 0.8.4 folder are quite the same of those of test3?

DirectX-Audio-Output works fine without Float32, but if I enable Float32 I still hear that nasty noise. Furthermore it seems like VLC is louder than other players (for example MPC) when I set the Volume to 100. This makes VLC sound a little bit overdriven. Other players do not! So this is a VLC specific problem. If I enable the EQ and lower Pre-Amp to ~8db I get good results. So that's my current workarround...
//Edit
nForce2 onBoard Sound / Windows XP SP-1 / DirectX 9.0c

that's great ! (it would mean that the non float 32 output is fixed)
the float32 output problem seems to be a nforce driver bug.
i think that we'll release with float32 disabled

@dionoea
But what about the volume?
Is it a good idea to set the Pre-Amp to 12db by default?
At least for me it's too loud (overdriven) at this setting...

Maximum un-amplified volume in VLC is 50%. any value about 50% can cause distortion

Using float 32 causes me some serious aural pain, leaving float32 off works like a charm.

But why ??? Usuallay a volume of 100 should be maximum un-amplified volume.
In other players I don't get distortion when I move the volume bar to 100%
If volume is too low at 100% for some reason you still can use pre-amp or normalizer to make it louder...

Maximum un-amplified volume in VLC is 50%.
???
it's definitely 100% (50% wouldn't make any sense)! the volume-slider only shows 50.

it seems your soundcard driver doesn't have marked, that it doesn't support float32. float32 always has to be converted to fixedpoint (eighter by a hardware-dsp, the driver, or the application). otherwise you'll run into such distortion.
the point that you don't get distortion with other players just show you, that they don't output 32bit float ...
of course vlc should also have 24 and 32 bit integer output, instead of only 16bit ...

I have disabled Float32 in VLC.
Still 100% is too loud and causes distortion in some videos.
50% volume in VLC seems to be "normal" volume (equal to full volume in MPC)
If I disable Float32 and lower Volume to 50% then DirectX Audio Output is working completely fine for me!

that's right. i've also noticed this with some files. seems this is caused by a specific module (mixer/resampler/conversion) in vlc.
