Full Screen to Second/Dual display switch?

Postby Murph74 » 22 Nov 2005 10:45

Hi folks-- great community I'm just finding out about here! Got a problem I think, and wondering if I'm overlooking something, not familiar enough to do it, or it's just not do-able for now, but....

Trying to play MPG and Xvid file by double clicking and going to full screen on my extended desktop/secondary display automatically. I found a post of another guy this week trying to do the same on a Mac, but thought I'd post here to see what the Win-World thought. :) So far I've tried playing with all the settings I could find including display2 under DirectX, but still doesn't launch in full screen (yes, the option is ticked), nor on monitor 2. The extent of the //./display2 and full screen getting along is when it DOES come up full screen on launch, it's a black screen on monitor one.

Ideally, when I click on the video file, I'd like it to go to auto-play, full screen, on display 2, then close when the file is completed. Would something as simple as a .BAT file possibly help accomplish this? Look forward to any fedback or success stories for this type of thing. The ultimate goal is to use this with my laptop when DJ'ing to play music vids too, so I want it to be as transparent as possible. Thanks!

After further researching, I'm not sure how similar the coding is, but there is a pluging I've played with for Winamp that does CDG (karaoke) graphics that has the //./Display2 functionality, and the auto close at end fo file functionality I'm trying to get out of VLC. Is it possible to see how it was done int eh coding of the plugin and adapt VLC to that? Just throwing out ideas here, I'm not sure it's anything more than a pipe dream to get this to work the way I want it to! :)

Well, I continue to play with teh software. I'm assuming it's a misfunctioning bit of code that may be the culprit. Right now, if I load a mpg into the player, and hit "F" twice, it goes full screen on the second display, but this is being done manually. Any suggestions on automating it? Thanks!

Still chipping away at this-- appears that if I use the ATI Hydravision, it will work to 'remember' the full screen setting thru the ATI software. I'm still under the impression that this should be able to be done with VLC by itself for lower end laptops-- anyone else have any input here? Thanks in advance!

Ok I am doing what you currently are trying to do, this is how I set mine up....

settings> preferences
check advance options
click video
then pick full screen

then click the + on video go to output modules, set it manually to directx and the click the plus, go to direct x click the refresh list button pick your display, should be the display number according to your windows xp settings.

the interface>general>wxWindows, uncheck embed video.

save settings close vlc restart and it should work, thats what I do and it always works for me.....hope that helps

I know you can get it to clone the video onto the other monitor, by picking the clone filter, but If you want to stretch it across both screens I dunno if you can............

Well, something is still amiss here... I tried your setup, dying-- no luck. It's very weird, and maybe it's my install or something, but using hte latest version of VLC, I just fresh installed, tried your settings- nothing. I actually get a black screen on my MAIN LCD (laptop) and nothing but my wallpaper on my TV out. The Hydra vision doesn't do me much good either as it requires the main and second display to be the same resolution, which isn't practical for me.

This is a HP 4610with ATI video if that matters, 768 meg of Ram. Any other ideas, or just drop back ten and punt? :)

Ahh thats what you are doing, ok, suggestion hydra vision kinda sucks dude used it before use the plain old ati control center or the ati catalyst control center........my friend had this problem on his ati setup with vlc on the tv out.

To get his working set your display setting from /.//Display2 back to default make sure overlay is on. In the CCC have overlay on, and you can have set your resolution to what ever even on that isnt supported on by tvs, and it will fix it on your tv, but I should point out a tv is always set to clone mode you cant change it, cause well a tv should be used for a montor, set CCC to theatre mode so even if vlc isnt fullscreened the video will remain fullscreened on the tv. I beleive this should fix your problem, you can even hide vlc on your monitor and the video will play on your tv fine.

Hope that helps..........btw if your desktop is set to anything not 640x864 and 1024x768, when you look at your desktop on the tv it might seem cut off, when you move the mouse to a part of the desktop it will scroll, to show you the rest(only 2 resolutions tvs support), but the video will be fullscreened properly, that should be the only thing that matters...............Also to use CCC you need net 1.1 and I suggest the newest ati drivers.........but CC wont need net...........but I never found hydra vision to be helpful, but CCC I have found very useful.........
