VLC will not play dvd

VLC will not play some dvds, seemingly randomly, that play ok on a normal dvd player. Here is the message log of one:

It seems that VLC has issue reading the DVD, this might be either a physical issue or something on our side

* Is the DVD scratched or anything?

* Do you use VLC 3.0? if so, was the DVD working with VLC 2.x otherwise could you try with VLC 3.0 ?

* Is the DVD working with another software player ?

* Could you give us the reference of the DVD ?

It's a brand new dvd, no scratches.
Not sure what version of VLC it is, it doesn't seem to say.
I don't have any other software that plays dvds
What do you mean by dvd reference?

* you can find the version in Help -> about. the latest version of VLC is available at https://www.videolan.org/

* the DVD reference is the name of the movie and the language/version. Ideally a serial number to help us retrieve the exact reference if needed (bar code, ASIN number )
