VLC 3.0.0 - Mouse wheel - scrolling very slow

Posted: 10 Feb 2018 16:07
by webmantz
After the installation of VLC 3.0.0, fast forward and rewind with the mouse wheel became very slow. In movies where I jumped with VLC 2.2.8 while scrolling with the mouse wheel ~ 1 minute per click, I jump under VLC 3.0.0 only ~ 6 seconds. Scrolling has become about 10 times slower.
Is it possible to set it back the way it was with VLC 2?

I use Windows 10 64bit, the mouse is a Logitech M510.
The problem occurs with both VLC 3 32bit and VLC 3 64bit.

Thanks for your help.

This doesn't help me, because my problem has nothing to do with the volume control, but with fast forward and rewind in the movie using a mouse wheel.

Sorry, i read bad the post. Anyway, i saw this version 3.0.0 is particulary sensible about <Output Modules>, both, Audio & Video. Setting them to Automatic, this time, seems to me gives more problems. Better, as i did, set them fixed, not Automatical (when i got both Audio & Video=DX11 seems VLC is "smoother" and gets better).

Am I the only one with that? Would be nice to know if it's my configuration or if it's VLC 3.0.0.

btw... I've also tried nightly VLC 4.0, it's exactly the same.

Raising the volume over 100% is slow because Windows does not allow it, and VLC resorts to an inefficient hack.

So don't raise the volume over 100%. If you need higher volume, raise the master.

Please read my first post! This is NOT about the volume control! It's about jumping forward and backward in the movie by using the scroll wheel.
Thanks.

Hi,

I guess you're not the only one.
This was one of the first things I noticed in V3.0, the extreme slow scrolling with the mouse wheel. This is one of the features I use most in VLC (quickly scroll through some recordings). It made me go back to V2.8.
Hope they fix this or provide a solution.

As webmantz mentioned he is speaking about scrolling on time progress bar to move forward or backward. (And not to raise up or down volume)

I feel like when scrolling in VLC 2.2.8 there was a scroll multiplier. I mean when starting to scroll it would jump 5 sec "per scroll" then increase to jump 10 sec "per scroll" and so on.
Now it's like there is no more multiplier and you go on to jump only 5 sec per scroll.
=> maybe it's why it feels so slow because now in 4 scrolls you would jump 20 seconds (= 4 x 5 sec) whereas with VLC 2.2.8 you would jump 75 seconds (= 5 sec + 10 sec + 20 sec + 40 sec) ?

I feel like when scrolling in VLC 2.2.8 there was a scroll multiplier. ...
That's not the same here. Up to VLC 2.2.8 was scrolled evenly fast, from 3.0 is scrolled evenly and slowly. However, this can be dependent on the mouse or mouse driver used.

I've noticed this as well and opened another thread about this before I saw this one.
It really bothers me a lot as I too am used to scrolling/seeking the video almost exclusively with the mouse wheel (when hovering over the seek bar) and since the speed changed it is driving me insane,
Please, can this scrolling speed be configurable (including the option to choose between an even step scroll and an "acceleration multiplier" thing)

I have this problem too with VLC 3.0.0. On previous versions it, if I used the scroll wheel for position control, it would scroll 1 minute 15 seconds if the mouse cursor was directly on the progress bar...and only 3 seconds if the cursor was anywhere else. Now with 3.0.0. the progress bar scroll speed is the same 3 seconds. I hope this is a bug because the faster scrolling is very useful.

... another thread ...

So - the following is from that other thread I mentioned - mederi asking to open a bug report / feature request about this issue:
Please file a bug report/feature request at https://trac.videolan.org/vlc
And Thomas creating said bug report (Thanks!):
Hello,

I created a bug report and hope that's correct.

Thomas
Keeping my fingers crossed this will be resolved in a minor update soon :)

I noticed the issue on a new PC. On my old PC it looks like I was using VLC 2.2.6. My new PC has VLC 3.0.1. I switched back to VLC 2.2.6 and it's back functioning like I liked it.

It would be great if VLC offered customization for mouse wheel position control speeds. I've been looking all over the internet for years now and everyone asks the same question, where is this option? I can't believe this isn't an option yet. Installing the old version I was used to got me back to normal at least.

VLC 3.0.2 still has this bug. 2.2.8 is the last version that the works properly.

Enable Gestures then you can use Click (and hold mouse button) and move slightly right to skip 10 seconds, click (hold) and left to skip backwards 10 seconds.

The 10 second skip CAN be altered in the Hotkey Settings > Short Jump Length > enter required skip length.

(how to enable Gestures - https://www.vlchelp.com/how-to-use-mouse-gestures/ )

You're all welcome :)

Hello just made an account to note a workaround.
On my computer I have the same bug that mouse wheel is very slow/weird to change volume, like it stutters. (even in the 0-100 range, not >100). However I noticed that I could "fix" it by changing the time by clicking on the timeline.
No idea how they are related but hey, it works.

Hello,

I saw that https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/19790 has been closed and in version 3.0.3 the speed ist much faster than in the previous version. This is fine so far.
However, are there any plans to add a setting which allows a user to specificy the speed when he uses the mouse wheel in order to move forward/ backward? One user likes to move forward faster than another, so this should be configurable.

Thanks,
BStnr

Tools > Preferences > Show settings=All > Interface \ Hotkeys settings: Short jump length [10].

Yes. It should be related to the middle-jump time.

I'm having this problem, VLC is ignoring most of the mouse-scroll-wheel input and only moving volume control up about one tick per second.

One factor is - it stops happening when the video is paused, then starts happening again when the video is playing. This only started happening after I installed a new version of VLC so it obviously is a bug that has been introduced over the last few months.

I haven't changed much in settings except I tried to create a large buffer cache which VLC completely ignored. I'll try to reset it back to default if that's possible - there is a default reset isn't there? - There should be.

[edit]
Resetting pref's didn't work.

[edit]
It did work after a restart of VLC after resetting preferences to defaults.

Issue started earlier this year, persisted through updates, currently 3.0.8 on w10.
While video playing, volume adjusts with 1s delays.

Example, staring at 100 and scrolling the mousewheel....
slow = 100 delay 95 delay 90 delay 85 delay 80 delay 75 delay 70 delay 65
Slug = 100 delay 95 90 85 delay 80 75 delay 70 65 60 55 delay 50 45 delay 40 35 30
fast = 100 95 90 85 80 75 70 65 60 ... no delay, no skips, smooth volume control.

Resolved by adjusting network-caching and file-caching in %appdata%\vlc\vlcrc

Fix #1 reset VLC settings

Fix #2 edit vlcrc, comment these entries (put a # in front of them)
#network-caching=300
#file-caching=300
#disc-caching=300 (I did not test disc - do people still use them?)

Further info:
Testing done with file compare tools on new auto-generated VLC folder.

The network-caching cut-off point varied from 1600s to 1800s.
Further testing might show a wider variance.

Network (smb) test1
network-caching=1872 fast
network-caching=1873 sluggish
network-caching=1874 slow
Network (smb) test2
network-caching=1632 fast
network-caching=1633 slow

File cache (ssd) would probably show some variance with different drives / controllers.
file-caching=1867 fast
file-caching=1868 slow

Hi, what is the audio output that you're using ?
