I have a movie file xpdvd-deuce2-ntsc-dvdr , which I got from a binary newsgroup, that has no extension. However, it plays fine in VLC, except the menu items *in* the movie don’t work.

I’m assuming the file is supposed to have an extension, and VLC just pretends it has one in order to play it. How do I find out what kind of file this is? It seems I should add the correct extension before I burn it.

GSPOT v 2.21 says the file is a RAR, but the file already plays in VLC without un-RARing. And when I un-RAR the file, I get a img file one hundredth the size of the original and when played, I see it’s the introduction (the introduction only) to the movie.

If VLC can play the file, VLC must be able to figure out what kind of file it is. I should be able to do the same.

Open vlc, click the View->"Stream and media info" menu item...

Then open the file and it'll tell you what it is.

The type mpgv seems to be the video part. So, should the proper extension for that file be mpg or mpgv?

And I realize VLC doesn’t have a hot-spot function so that you can click on the menus, but is there a program that does? Or is there any way to make these options available while playing the file with VLC?
