Old Vizio TV with no HDMI passthrough, even older Marantz SR-4600 A/V receiver with no HDMI inputs/outputs, home-made PC with Realtek High Definition onboard audio.

Ever since upgrading to Win 10, I have been struggling to push Dolby/DTS to the speakers. In the absence of any settings in VLC Player that seem wrong, I've been tweaking and playing around rather mindlessly to try to find something that works. On files with 5.1 or 7.1 audio, I see a PCM indication on the amp but lights for only 2 channels, and the sound is indeed stereo.

Once in a great while, though, it does seem to work. There have been a couple of periods of a week or so each when I could hear all the channels. No idea what I did to make it work. Then something changes, and I'm back to the same old problem. I'm not sure if it a matter of differences in the files I'm trying to play or MS pushed out a fix that changed something or whatever.

I'm fairly sure it's not a hardware problem because MS's bundled "Movies & TV" app works fine. 5.1 sound with no problems. I want to use VLC, though -- there are other things about the MS app that I don't like. The audio is correct on Windows Media Player also.

I'd appreciate any tips on troubleshooting this matter.

I also have sound trouble using an optical spdif to DAC. The codecs affected include DTS as you describe. See (https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 96f18a5552) if your interested. For me the problem only exists on vlc v3.0. I have no problem with sound using v2.2.4 so I can only suggest trying this older version until a volunteer gets around to fixing this bug (many months have passed since I first reported this).

Could you try with a recent nightly and share the logs if the problem still occurs?

There has been many changes related to audio output and passthrough in the last months.

Downloaded vlc-3.0.0-20170803-0458-git-win64.7z and opened with "vlc.exe --extraintf=http:logger --verbose=2 --file-logging --logfile=vlc-log.txt". Exact same problem as described in (https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 96f18a5552), which may slightly differ from titoj's problem but since we both have trouble with optical spdif... probably related. Whilst the particular file below isn't DTS (can't find one right now), the resulting problem is exactly the same:
