Suddenly, VLC no longer plays audio

On a Sony Vaio laptop from 2008, running Windows 10 Home version, playing through a TV which I have connected via HDMI, a configuration which plays audio great from system sounds, web sites and other media players and until YESTERDAY played audio great through VLC , VLC just STOPPED playing audio for all files I attempt to play on it.

I upgraded from 2.2.4 to 2.2.6 but I think that was successful at first. I'm on "staycation" and I'm watching a lot of old TV shows. I don't remember if the aduio cut out before or after the upgrade.

I made no other adjustments to my system or to VLC.

I tried to follow the FAQ instructions for no audio but nothing worked. Audio Module was set to automatic previously so I set it back after the fixes didn't work.

I should add that I uninstalled 2.2.6, emptied the cache and deleted preferences, reinstalled 2.2.6, uninstalled it, reverted back to 2.2.4, then back to 2.2.6 Nothing in the uninstall/reinstall department has worked.

ive tried everything that they said to do and i still have no sound any other ideas would be muchly appriciated
Try to rename the executable to VLC2.exe.
If it works then for some reason VLC has been muted in the sound mixer settings.
