Problems with playing 4k x265 files

Hello,
When I play a mkv x265 file on VLC, it stutters, freezes and sometimes crashes. It won't work
It also uses a lot CPU.
When I play it with windows media player or movies and series, it works just fine, it uses like nothing of my CPU ( 7/8% ) or memory, but with some files it won't play sound, only video. Is there maybe a solution for?
I also downloaded an other media player Potplayer, it works fine, but it uses all my memory and CPU.
Info about my machine:
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
CPU: i5-7600 3.5 Ghz
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB 3000MHz DDR4
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 (8GB)
HD: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB
Questions are, why doesn't VLC player works with 4k files and all the other programs do, 2nd why does VLC and Podplayer uses so much cpu and memory when windows media player and movies and series doesn't do that, 3rd Why does some files doesn't play sound on windows media player.
Thanks for your time.
Regards,
Teague

Try VLC 3.0.0
nightly build.
And set it to use DXVA:
Tools -> Preferences -> Video
Output = Automatic
Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
Hardware accelerated decoding = DXVA 2.0
Then save, exit and restart VLC.

Hello,
I have the same problem again.
What Lotesdelere suggested doesn't work now.
I have reinstalled windows 10. It's maybe cos of that?
VLC takes 100% of my cpu
Potplayer takes around 55%
It's a MP4 file now.
What can I do now?

Still with VLC 3.0.0
nightly build, a recent one.
Set it to use DXVA3 aka D3D11:
Tools -> Preferences -> Video
Output = D3D11
Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
Hardware accelerated decoding = D3D11 Video Acceleration
Then save, exit and restart VLC.

Hello Lotesdelere,
Thank you for the quick response.
I tried it, but with no succes, still 100% cpu
It even does it with 1080 files aswell, that's weird ( 100% CPU )
PotPlayer only uses between 3 and 5% CPU with 1080 files.
It's like the mediaplayers aren't finding my GPU, about the 4k files.
the difference is that I have updated my bios and other drivers for my bios
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support ... t_download
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support ... own-driver

Make sure VLC is added to the Nvidia Control Panel -> 3D settings white list.

That made it worse for PotPlayer, it took 100% CPU.
I removed potplayer from it, but I can't remove VLC from it.
It didn't help for VLC still 100% CPU.

That sounds like a driver issue.
Do you have more than one graphics card ? If so, right click on VLC then click on "Run with graphics processor" and select Nvidia 1070.
Then open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the
full resulting log here or on
Pastebin.com if it's too long.
Also please upload a short sample of a problematic file to either
Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to
EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.
If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

I have only 1 GPU, but the proccesor has also a GPU Intel® HD Graphics 630
I right click on VLC but can't find use GPU 1070
I just opened VLC, with nothing running on it and my CPU went to 100%.
I closed it CPU went back to normal.
Is there something wrong with VLC install?
I go to this site
https://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win64/last/
and I pick this file
vlc-3.0.0-20170814-0457-git-win64.7z
1st I had this file for VLC
vlc-3.0.0-20170814-0457-git-win64-debug.7z
Then I extract the file with 7z to a file /f:program files/VLC
And then I open VLC or play file with VLC
Both had the exact same problem

That's very strange.
What is happening if your rename VLC.exe to VLC2.exe or any other name ?

Good call, change the name of vlc.exe file to vlc2.exe
And when nothing is running on VLC, my pc stays idle, no increase in CPU.
When I played the 4k file it takes 60% CPU, a bit more then potplayer but that's supected cos PotPlayer is better in that area.
Maybe it's the file that I have is badly put together.
Getting an other file of 4k, to check if it has the same problem.

Definitely a major driver issue then.

How can I know which driver it is?
For my motherboard I use these sites:
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support ... t_download
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support ... own-driver ( win10-64 )
Processor
Intel driver utility
GPU
Nvidia geforce experience
But other mediaplayers didn't had that problem.
If it was a driver problem, shouldn't other mediaplayers have the same problem?
MPC-HC
PotPlayer

Tried an other file, same issue.
But this 1 I had before and it worked fine.

MPC-HC, plays the 4k movies just fine. Hardly any CPU usage.
Why are the other mediaplayers not capable of doing the same?

Since it works when you rename VLC.exe to something else, it's a driver issue and not a VLC issue.
And I asked for the log and for a sample, read my post above again.

I just renamed VLC.exe file from VLC2.exe to VLC.exe and it behaves now the same as the VLC2.exe file

I hope that these are the files you need.
PotPlayer is playing 4k contenct fine again.
MPC-HC and Potplayer working fine again with 4k content.
If it's a driver issue should those mediaplayers also be affected by the driver issue?

But it only occurs with VLC, my v3.0.0 nightly build crashes after one second of playback.
MPV and MPC-HC are playing it fine, however FFplay struggles but at least it doesn't crash.
Maybe because of this ? :
Code: Select all
Format profile : Main 10@L6.1@Main
Width : 3 840 pixels
Height : 2 160 pixels

Sorry, but why are you forcing dxva2 with D3D11 ? Those are not really compatible.

Hi,
I've tested your sample with the last nightly build of VLC on a Windows 10 Intel HD Graphics 620 laptop, and it works just fine with either:
- D3D9 video output with DXVA2 decoding acceleration module
or
- D3D11 video output with D3D11 decoding acceleration module
The logs you sent suggest you have D3D11 video output + DXVA2 hardware decoding enabled, which is not compatible.
Have you tried one of the preference setup above ?

I wonder why VLC has such radically different performance on two different machines.
Machine #1 is a Asus Z390-A with i7-9700K, MSI GTX1060, running Windows 10 Pro. Cost: $1500
Maching #2 is a Supermicro X10DRi with dual Xeon E5-2667, MSI GTX1080Ti, running Windows 7 Pro. Cost $15,000
Machine #1, running VLC 3.0.4, plays 4K HEVC files with no effort only about 3% CPU.
Machien #2, running VLC 3.0.4, just freezes and displays an embossed effect frame every 10 seconds or so. It won't even play HD files in h.264. An old version of VLC will play h.264 up to 4K pretty smoothly on that machine.
So wrt 3.0.4, I'm wondering what dictates the difference in performance--is it the host CPU, or is it the O/S? Does the i7 CPU have some native decode instructions for HEVC that the Xeons don't, or does Windows 10 facilitate this?
I'm on the verge of doing a from scratch system rebuild of the dual Xeon system with Windows 10 just to see if it works better with video playback.

Probably the graphic card and drivers.

That seems counter intuitive. Why would a GTX1060 completely outperform a GTX1080Ti by such a wide margin?
