Sound disappearing

Sometime while playing a video the sound disappears, and reappears after a while; it's not the video file, since going back to the point where it disappeared I can hear the sound just fine, but I can't find what's going on and I can't duplicate it. It's just going fine, then mute, then fine again.
I tried resetting the settings, but nothing changed.
I'm running VLC 2.2.4 on a Windows 10 machine.

Can it be a connection problem to the speakers?

I don't think so: it seems really random, and it happened on two different PCs.

The faith is not the know. You should check it.

Sure, I'll check as soon as possible, unfortunately I don't have any other speakers at the moment (apart those on the other PC which has the same issue).

What you can do right now:
Reset all settings and the cache as described here:

Ok, thanks; I'll keep you updated if that works.

It just happened again; I'll try if I can hear an audio file while it happens, as soon as it happens again.

It happened again; I opened an audio file and that was muted, too. I'll try with a headset as soon as I can.
