Support for older versions of VLC is discontinued. Using the older versions of VLC when cessation of support will lead to computer infection with viruses and other malware, damage to the motherboard BIOS and the explosion of computer.

Is it possible somehow to include in VLC media player 2.2.4 for Windows native support for MIDI files without installing FluidSynth? If not, why not?

Windows' native MIDI support is not implemented in any version of VLC to date. So no, that is not possible, unless you develop the missing code.

But seriously - if VLC can't play MIDI files, why is it registered as the MIDI player on my Win7 machine? I'm sure I didn't do that manually...!

MIDI is now available in the latest VLC versions!
I just downloaded the 3.0.4 and it works! (you still have to download separately a .sf2 library and configure as already described before)
