VLC is stretching aspect ratio while cropping!

Hi,
Below is a pic of what VLC is doing to my video aspect ratio while applying a crop:
As you can see, it has been stretched... Here's how the crop should look below (using a VLC-based alternative software build):
Is this distortion a bug with the latest version of VLC perhaps? I've used the feature several times in the past and don't remember it stretching the video output in such a way...
