How to download Youtube video?

I just tried entering a Youtube video address into the "open network stream" option in VLC 2.2.4. When I tried to play it all I got was the first frame of the video alternating with the VLC logo. The screen size didn't expand, the screen picture was small in the center of the actual VLC screen. (I tried with two different Youtube videos but the result was the same.
Then I read that one could use VLC to download a Youtube video directly. I haven't been able to find how to do this so I'm asking here. Can someone tell me if this is possible, and give me instructions if it is.
Thanks.... John

I just received an email notification that shahxor had replied to this thread. So where is the reply, shahxor, is it in invisible ink?

It has been removed because it was spam.
That said, VLC is not a downloader. You can use a dedicated tool but IIRC it breaks Youtube-Google's terms of service so we are not going to promote any one.

Thanks for clarifying this. It would be nice if this forum(like others do) included some kind of marker that indicated removal because of spam.
The only reason I tried VLC to download youtube videos was because I read an article that listed VLC as one way to do this. I have an Firefox addon that will do the same, but I liked the idea of using VLC.
What did you mean by "IIRC"?

Well, VLC can do it but the result will be the same as when done with dedicated tools which are easier to use.
And about IIRC:
