Captures and records WMV as ASF but not able to play the ASF file

Please let me start by saying I don't understand all the coding and container jargon. I just use VLC to make clips of longer vids.
Problem is when I play a WMV file it saves the clip as an ASF. This would be ok (i guess, would rather mp4) but the ASF file doesn't even play.

When I go to play the VLC created ASF file, it sits there doing nothing, (or sometimes will play with no sound) then I have to move the scroll bar to get it to play.

Anyone know of a solution for this?

Recording and transcoding are somehow broken in recent builds, this is a known issue awaiting for a fix.
Meanwhile you should use an older version.
