Of course, you cannot play tape.
To play dvd, you need to enter "Disc device" path from "Open Disk" dialog.
My computer has disk drive at device "D". So I enter "D:\" to the "Disc device".

Hi courtrock77,

are you trying to play a "real=physical" DVD, or do you have DVD-image on disk ?
in both cases you should start vlc selecting media --> open Media
in case of a physical DVD open your optical drive
in case of an DVD-image open the path to VIDEO_TS

To answer your question "optical drive" -
pls. have a look at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw_el_ ... t4dnc/view
Unfortunately I have a German Windows 10 x64, so my translations may not fit to your Windows Edition.
In my case I have 2 optical drives, G: is a BluRay Burner and J: is a DVD Burner.

open on your PC the Windows Explorer and open "My PC (? hopefully correct for your Windows Edition)
In a correct Windows installation you should see on the "open media" menu the character of your optical drive (in my case G:) -
pls. see https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw_el_ ... g4ck0/view
If you do not see the character of your optical drive, you have a problem in your Windows.

PS.: I am using a vlc-2.2.4 version with more features than the standard version - it can be found on
https://sourceforge.net/projects/dvdx/f ... p/download
More details on the vlc version I use on http://www.labdv.com/aacs/
