I'm currently using VLC 1.1.11 and it won't play x265 mkv files. Which version do I need for this that will run in WinXP?

Also, can I install two different versions on the same computer. I don't want to give up v 1.1.11.

Update to the latest version, using a VLC 3.0.0 nightly build may also be better.

Last time I checked, and it was quite a while ago, we could specify the location of the VLCRC config file but the interface INI was shared, which may lead to troubles.
Another solution is to keep both VLC folders AND settings folders in %APPDATA% and to rename both of them when needed. Annoying but it works, although no mistake in the renaming is allowed.

Do you know which was the first version of VLC that successfully played x265 files?

Generally speaking, 2.1.0, but it depends.
