Playback stops at random. Read error: Permission denied

Postby todda7 » 12 Sep 2016 23:31

Hi.

When I play video files (from different and unrelated sources), the playback stops, maybe after 10 or 15 minutes, and the log reads:

Code: Select all

core error: Could not convert timestamp 0 filesystem error: read error: Permission denied core warning: buffer too late (-33212000 us): dropped
Not only does it happen to VLC, but other video players as well.
The disk has no SMART errors.
As far as I can tell, there are no other programs that utilize the disk or the file.

What could be the cause?

Windows 10 x64 // Newest VLC as of today

These videos.... are they perhaps bootleg movies?

Blu-Ray has an additional copy protection hidden in the audiotrack called Cinavia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinavia. I know it's mandatory in all BR players... and it maybe be on DVDs as well. When a compressed movie is played on a thumbdrive through, say a smart BR player, it pauses about 15 minutes in and displays a warning. But I have no idea why it would effect VLC. (did Windows add this protection? What OS do you use?) I only raise the possibility because it's suspiciously like the way this DRM protection kicks in. So these files may not have been scrubbed of this DRM. You'll have to experiment to see if some files work, and some don't.

Just a thought since no one else took a stab at it.

From http://www.myce.com/article/cinavia-the ... d-68001/ some SOFTWARE PLAYERS players also contain Cinavia protections...

"This Cinavia detector is being introduced on more and more Blu-ray players. The protection has been a mandatory part of the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) on all Blu-ray players since 2012 and a Cinavia detector can now be found in software players from e.g. Cyberlink, Arcsoft, Nero but also in recent hardware Blu-ray players from all manufacturers, as well the Playstation 3. Old Blu-ray players usually do not contain a Cinavia detector and accept copies of Cinavia protected discs."

Another possibility is a file may not have downloaded completely. It may read as being the full size but some of my downloads are half blank... and VLC acts oddly. I've never looked at the error log.

I also had problems with some .flv files downloaded using Video Cache View. If I played the online version while I was downloading it... it would stop or break up. I did MD5 hashes on the problem file and the ones that worked... and they were different. One was corrupted.

Probably a service is running and accessing the file, or maybe they are huge files?
