Hi!

I've never posted here before so please forgive my ignorance!

My work IT group just updated my VLC media player from 2.1.5 Rincewind to 2.2.4 Weatherwax. Now, when I try to record my desktop, VLC automatically crashes as soon as I hit the start button. Below are the steps I follow to record my desktop on Windows 7 64-bit

• Media > Convert/Save
  Click the Capture Device tab
  Change Capture Mode to Desktop
  Change Desired frame rate for the capture to 15.00 f/s
  Click the Convert/Save button
  Click the Browse button, navigate to desktop, and enter the name the file will be called in the File name field
  Click save
  Click the start button
  VLC automatically crashes

I don't know how to stop it from happening. I never had a problem using 2.1.5, but since my work seems to think it's wise to update VLC without my permission, I need to find away to be able to use VLC 2.2.4 without it crashing. Can someone help?

Hi, I'm experiencing the same problem as well! Whenever I click Start, the application exits without an error code or anything. This happens with 2.2.4 for me also. Any help here guys?

Transcoding is somehow broken in recent builds, this is a known issue awaiting for a fix.
Meanwhile you should use an older version.

Yes, I was using 2.1.5 Rincewind without issue, but it automatically updated to the 2.2.4 version. I've tried finding a way to disable the auto update, but I can't seem to find a way. Do you know of a way to disable the auto update in 2.1.5?

Tools -> Preferences
And at the bottom of the Interface tab untick the Activate Update Notifier option.
Then save, exit and restart VLC.

Yep. Me too.

Brand new install - with admin permissions - 64bit Windows 10 environment.

Resetting preferences does not help.

What version does not crash, and is Win 10 compatible? - I'll install that.

i am using Windows 10 Pro [full install, NOT upgraded from win7 or 8] and although VLC did run initially it now simply won't run any avis, mpegs or other video.

now? VLC simply crashes and reports "send error report to VLC devs" which always fails. i tried sending a report over 30 times and it reported "cannot connect to VLC ftp".

it would seem that VLC just does not work within a windows 10 Pro environment.

i will try a previous version after clearing out as much of the 2.2.4 vs of VLC from the registry & SSD.

i have tried downloading VLC vers 2.2.3 [the previous version] but went offline before installing it.
i used CCleaner to wipe all trace from the registy then edited the registry for all VLC traces, installed vers 2.2.3 offline, disabled autoupdate and delete preferences and cache
and so far it has been working fine offline.
i haven't tried using it online but i can say that so far VLC 2.2.3 works with Win10 Pro without crashing at startup, and has allowed me to create a vast number of playlists for my fav avis and mpegs mkv files and play many different shows.

i have not yet tried a DVD movie, say 'Sin City' or 'The Watchmen' - offline or on - though i believe i will go offline before trying those out. i have a suspicion Micro$oft aren't happy about VLC being free or maybe i'm just paranoid?

So, for those with win10 Pro having issues with getting VLC to simply run without crashing, try installing 2.2.3, untick the autoupdate and delete the preferences and cache. all i can say is that my video files are running again and VLC doesn't instantly crash. i'll update this message when i try some vids online and try a standard regional DVD movie.

I have already tried that and it doesn't work - VLC still updates automatically.

Im getting crashes now when adding files to my playlist, it just closes itself without warning.
