VLC crashes playing wav file from Outlook

Howdy,
Since updating to VLC 2.2.3 we have been having the issue of VLC crashing when people (5+ PCs confirmed so far) try to listen to their voicemails (wav format) by double clicking the attachment within Outlook. If the user saves it to their hard drive it will play fine. Is this a known issue?
Thanks

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

I was incorrect in that the file works when saved from the desktop. No debug logging is captured for some reason. When the saved file is selected VLC just closes completely with nothing in the log. I uploaded a test voicemail.wav to http://streams.videolan.org/upload but was not given a link to it.

I'm also seeing similar behavior. VLC 2.2.3 and Outlook wav attachments are cashing VLC to crash.

I'm also seeing weird behavior in 2.2.3. VLC is crashing everytime I try to watch a live stream from my network camera.

Found this in the tracker: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/16909#comment:1

Looks to be similar enough. Would there be a nightly 2.2.x build to test? I only see 3.0 nightly builds.

My users are seeing the same issue with .wav files generated by our NEC phone system. Based on that bug tracker report it appears the issue will be resolved in the next patch. So probably a dumb question but when would be expect to see that next patch? I am not familiar with the patch frequency of VLC.

If soon then I can have everyone work around but if it is going to be a few weeks then I need to get everyone defaulted back to windows media player :(

Great, any kind of tentative release date on that? I had a look back at previous releases and it looks like they are a few months apart at a minimum.

Hi All!

Just thought I would mention, this is happening in our organization as well, with .wav files generated by our Cisco phone system.

Many people are effected, a quick release for the update would be much appreciated!

This is happening to any .wav file, not specific to any phone system. Other file types work: .wma, .mp3, .mp4, etc.

so it looks like when you run 2.2.3 wav files do not work. I just downgraded to 2.2.1 as one computer worked fine with wavs and it was on 2.2.1. When I downgraded the pc that was having problems after the downgrade the wavs files started working and wasn't crashing either through outlook or on the pc. It looks like a bug in whatever updates was done between 2.2.1 and 2.2.3

I just tested in linux with vlc compiled myself:

test-file from bug-tracker: vlc-2.0.9 and vlc-2.2.2 => okay but vlc-2.2.3 => crash with "Segmentation fault"

own wav file (obtained from a simple CD rip) => okay also with vlc-2.2.3

So this is a clear well-defined particular bug independant of the system but for certain types of wav files.
