Direct3D, DirectX, or OpenGL Video Output?

Hi
I am using Windows XP SP3.
I installed the newest version of VLC (vlc-2.2.2-win32.exe),
and when playing video files, I had a bug - horizontal lines appearing on the video.
After searching in Google, I found that the solution is going to Preferences (Ctrl-P), then Video tab, then changing the Output value to something else than "Automatic".
It indeed helped, the bug is gone, the problem is solved.
I noticed that the bug is solved in either Direct3D, DirectX, or OpenGL Video Output options.
And now I wonder,
should I prefer any one of these 3 over the others?
Thank you
