VLC plays DVD too fast

This is with current VLC 2.2.1 on Win 7 32-bit, fresh install (no preferences changed), set to play at "1.00x".
I have a standard DVD folder named VIDEO_TS containing the .IFO, .VOB, and .BUP files of a video. If I burn this to a DVD disk and play that disk in a desktop machine, it works fine.
But if I try to play the DVD disk normally with VLC, using the DVD menu, the video runs at about 50x speed. Same thing if I tell VLC to play the DVD folder on a hard drive, or if I tell VLC to run the VIDEO_TS.IFO file.
I own CloneDVD2 and transcoded the video (actually keeping the same size) but have the same speed problems with the new version.
OTOH, using VLC to play the .VOBs individually works fine. So, in my total lack of knowledge, I'm suspecting the .IFO structure...
Any ideas?
