Is there any news of progress on this yet?

Most people don't care because they use the embedded video playback and/or stop the video via other means. Of the few people who do care, none volunteered to write a patch.
So no progress.

Up to version 2.0.8, a video window could be closed via the Close button.

Yes, I have been using VLC for quite a while and noticed that it stopped working as you said.

Yes, I was wondering what the current status was as the problem did not seem to be fixed with the new release.
