VLC sound clarity

There's no question VLC is the most impressive sound/video program out there.

However I've found that VLC sound (in my case, sound accompanying downloaded youTube .mp4 files) is very muddy--to the point of it being difficult to understand speech. At first I thought it was just poor sound recording on the part of the person who made the youtube interview. However, I tried playing the clips on various media players that played video and found that (of all things!) Windows Media Player played back a much cleaner and crisper sound--one where I could easily understand what was being said. The difference is remarkable.

I don't know what Windows Media Player needs to do differently (WMP does not provide sound adjustments like treble/bass) and I can't describe technically exactly how the sound needs to be modified to be less muddy).

Is there a way, within VLC, of modifying the sound so that it is "clearer"

Is this something that other people have noticed?
Is anyone working on it?

Yes, I noticed same thing...

Try:
Tools
Preferences
interface
[!] Show Advanced controls.
{Save}

Then try:
Tools
Preferences
Audio:
Disable Peak Protection.
Try Dissable/Enable Time Streching Audio. "Here VLC2.2.0 has the buttons upside/down. On is Off, something strange."

Audio:
SRC Resampler:
Sinc function (Best Quality)
Speex resampler: quality: 10

Output Modules: Try Windows Multimedia Device Output
The DirectX "depending on you soundcard driver." May have problems or Not.
Or WaveOut.


Always {Save} and reboot VLC.

VLC Player does not have ASIO Driver support.

If you want best audio Playback in Windows or Mac
Try ProTools HD 9 or HD10.

Second best: convert .mp3 to .wav with free AudioActive MP3 converter,
then load to
VSTHost, set with ASIO drivers.

QuickTime Player works Ok.
There is a very $$$ player for Mac OSX, but does not sound better than ProTools HD.

Haven't tried Audacity for Windows.
For Linux was Ok.

Foobar2000 was disappointing.
WinAmp much better.
VirtualDj7 also sounds nice.
OTSLabs, nice sound.
Djdecks.be nice sound, all files FLAC 96KHz 24bit, purchased by Atomix VirtualDj8.

Tools/Preferences/Interface:
There’s no Show Advanced Controls
Tools/Preferences/Audio:
There’s no Disable Peak Protection
There is an Enable Time-Stretching audio checkbox which under Reset Preferences is unchecked.
There is no SRC Resampler, Sinc Function, or Speed resampler

I googled “best audio output module vlc”, got “Chapter 2. Modules and options for VLC” but found no Output Modules titled “Windows Multimedia Device Output” and wouldn’t know how to install an output module into VLC.

WinAmp ended in 2013.

Is there something I'm missing?
