Windows 10 VLC 2.2.1 hang and crash?

Starting last night, possibly due to the recent batch of Windows 10 updates, I've had issues with VLC freezing video after about 5 mins of playback. Audio continues normally. Clicking on the window turns the window black where it then eventually crashes. I'm prompted for an submit a crash report upon restarting VLC. Sent a ton of crash reports by this point as I keep trying to get through the video I'm watching. Its happened with MKV and MP4 so far. I've also had video freezes of a similar nature in iTunes but historically thats been terrible on Windows for me so I can't say if that's related. I haven't seen any playback issues on my other machine which serves as a Kodi box in my livingroom. They both run Windows 10 Pro x64 and are both updated with the same Windows Updates. The only difference is that the system with the freezing is using an Nvidia GTX 980 on driver version 355.60. The other working machine is Intel integrated graphics. Like i said, before last night video playback was just fine. The only change that day was the installation of Windows Updates KB3081448, KB3081452 and KB3081449 which occured on both systems. Not sure if its a VLC issue, Windows issue, driver issue or a combo of all three. If there are logs I can post let me know where to look. Thanks.

And after a new install and a new video driver its still happening. I cant watch anything and its isolated to only VLC and only started since the move to Windows 10. I also notice that when it hangs, the taskbar icons all go screwy and display other icons. Even over the start button. Once I kill VLC they all return to normal. There's something going on here between windows and VLC that I"ve not seen in any other programs. Its getting irritating.

Also crashed on 2.1.5. So I think this is happening regardless of the version. So at this point I'm stumped.

VLC player 2.2 crashes on my Windows 10 PC every time I use the STOP button. One of my colleagues suspected the crash is probably related with video drivers, because now the new version of VLC come with hardware acceleration enabled in automatic mode, and if the video drivers are not fully updated or not installed properly, then it could be causing the crash.
