VLC fixed window size and video always fit window

Ok. VLC ver 2.2.1.

I h ave been round and round with the settings and for the life of me can't figure out how to get VLC to open all my videos to a fixed sized window and have the video always fit that window size.. I open tools preferences then video select all then window properties set it to what I want. When I open the video it makes the window huge. I have a 24" 1080p monitor and the window is huge extending off the monitor. I do have 2 monitors the other being a 22". Sample of video sizes I am opening are 1920x1080 1280x960. I want vlc to open any video in a 900x500 window on my 24" monitor. The 1280x960 window opens fine not off the monitor but it's still bigger then I want.

I have fiddled with many setting to try and get this to work but as soon as a video gets larger then 1280x960 the window goes off the monitor. Also it isn't re sizing the video correctly. I opened a 320x240 video and it opened it at that size instead of the size I had set.

This is a fresh install of VLC on Win 10 pro

Can someone please help me with this?

Same question, only XP sp3. Video/"Always Fit Window" won't stay checked between invocations. Thanks!

everyone knows that all the preferences never open all videos to a fixed sized window neither they do do what their name let's us suppose they do; the info say the meaning of option like 0 or -1 but they don't say what if you enter another number, whatever you in the preferences doesn't work as you espect; every player has features easy to be settled, to choose and to fix the window size and the video size, while VLC team Always says «it's in the preferences» but never and never and really never they spent 1 word to explain and to shhow in detail how, for example, to have constant height of 800 pixel for every video playing..... obviously this is the preferences.... thanks - Sauro
