4k videos reaaaaally slow

Postby freemp » 27 Jul 2015 06:03

Hello,

I would like to be able to watch 4k movies on VLC, but when I open it, it is veeeeery slow and it crashes often.

My screen isn't 4k, but i take videos of landscapes and i would like to zoom on them (using the interactive zoom), so that's why i dont want to downgrade the video.

I think I have a good computer (not the best, but it is not bad i think).

Here is my config :

GeForce GTX 675M / 2GB DDR5
Intel i7-3610 QM

Could you help me ?

Thanks a lot !

Hello freemp,
Try Changing preference

1) Ctrl+P --> input/codecs--> Hardware-accelerated decoding
2) Change from Automatic to "DirectX Video Acceleration DXVA2.0"

Save and close vlc media player instance

try now it will work

Hello,

I tried what you said but it doesn't fix my problem.

Could you explain me the idea behind those manipulations ?

Thanks !!

To render 4K it is not necessary to have discreet GPU (Nvdia/AMD). Intel Graphic chipsets are OK.
From 3rd Generation of Intel i3,i5,i7 Support 4K.
From Vlc 2.2.X onward 4K display is better (personal experience.)

I hope you are using Windows? kindly specify details HW &SW

Why DXVA? DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA)
--> In nutshell, It is HW accelerated A/V decoding engine. As you may know 4K requires more video processing (decoding) power, with DXVA software it is possible for VLC use HW video decoder.

could you publish statistic info regarding 4K-movie. use VLC statistic option (ctrl + J)

Here the statistics :
Image

Some translations :
"Affiché" -> "Displayed"
"Perdu" -> "Lost"
"Décodé" -> "Decoded"
"Taille des données" -> "Size of datas"
"Débit d'entrée" -> "Input debit"

I use Windows 7, VLC is 2.1.5 (in fact my interactive zoom on more recent version, that's why i dont have a 2.2.x, I would prefer to keep it if possible of course)
CPU : Intel Core i7-3610 QM @2.30 GhZ
GPU : Nvidia Geforce GTX 675M / 2GB DDR5
RAM : 8GB DDR3

Thanks a lot !

VLC does not handle 4K videos quite well, I have tried this too. So I decided to transcode my 4K MXF footages with Pavtube and save to MP4 for VLC. This time the video playback is fluent.

Hello freemp,

Do you use 32-bit or 64 bit vlc ? from stat report it look like you are losing frames.
is it after zooming slows down? or even normal play also affected?
