As everyone knows, microsoft stupidly dropped dvd maker from windows 8. With vista, a dvd would autoplay as soon as it was installed. in win8, nothing happens. I go to computer, click dvd recorder, which win8 recognizes as a cd player, and right-click/open. I get a list of files in separate audio and video folders. In the video folder, there are dozens of items with the videolan orange/white cones. Right-clicking any of them, and then clicking Play using VLC, gives the normal view screen but it either stays blank or displays: VLC could not read the file (Bad file descriptor). Is my problem VLC, or one of the many I have with windows 8?

That is quite annoying. To solve this, you can backup your DVD discs with a DVD copier beforehand, then add into VLC for viewing or anything else.

Try this:
Go to control panel and search for DVD.
See if AUTOPLAY pops up.
If so, open it and see if it's been turned off.
Good luck!
