Aspect Ratio of VLC Snapshots

My snapshots are not taken with the aspect ratio I set in preferences. I set the aspect ratio for snapshots to be 1920x1080 and they are being taken at 720x480! I have tried everything even removing and reinstalling. I'm not sure what changed but this problem is a recent one because I did not have an issue before. Maybe an update changed something? I'm running VLC 2.2.1 Terry Pratchett (Weatherwax) & Windows 8.1 OS. Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you!

Hi everyone!
Yes, there is an error with snapshots aspect ratio in current version. all snapshots are taken with original resolutions, but without keeping aspect ratio.
For example, if a channel is in SD 16:9, snapshots are saved in original resolution 720x576, so the picture is squeezed.

I have to extend each photo manually, what's very tiring...

Previously it worked correct, and snapshots were saved with original aspect ratio.

Is it a chance, to solve this problem, or, maybe, is it possible, to find some old version of VLC, in which it works correct?

Ok, there is an error with snapshots, but you wrote: "I set the aspect ratio for snapshots to be 1920x1080". Where did you aspect ratio set to 1920x1080?

In preferences under tools. For show settings I clicked "All" and chose "Video". Then in the box for "Snapshots" there is the option to set the "Video snapshot width and height. I set the width to 1920 and the height to 1080 because that is the resolution of my LCD TV. 16:9

Yes, you are right. The settings in the advanced video settings should affect the aspect ratio of snapshots.

According to my observations do not apply them in version 2.2.1, but in the version 2.1.5

However, the aspect ratio is set only indirectly with these settings. Primarily, these settings affect the image size.

With your settings (1920:1080) a snapshot of your source (304x258) will get a size of 1920x1080 with the version 2.1.5. You do not want it but surely.

A value for the pure aspect ratio for images in 16: 9 format would be 1.78.

Thank you for your help, but you lost me with that last sentence. Could you explain A little more how the 1.78 relates to the 16:9 format? Are you talking about pixel squareness? I must admit math and numbers are not my strengths. Also how is an aspect ratio "pure" as opposed to an aspect ratio that is un-pure? I'm new to all this kind of stuff but learning as I go.

The aspect ratio of a rectangle is the ratio of its longer side to its shorter side.

For example:
1920 / 1080 = 1.78
1280 / 720 = 1.78
16 / 9 = 1.78

You can say: The aspect ratio is 1920 to 1080 or the aspect ratio is 1280 to 720 or the aspect ratio is 16 to 9.

But you can better say, the aspect ratio is 1.78 (or 1.78:1) or 16:9. So you are independent of the size of the video.

I have written to you: See wikipedia for what is "aspect ratio".
