Using VLC with windows media player in windows 7

Greetings:

Once I became familiar with VLC and learned how to convert, I did so to mp4. But I had no problems whatsoever playing that converted video on Windows Media Player.
I had to do the umpteenth system restore (another question in another topic) I lost a codec. Anyway, the converted videos won't play.

Any suggestions? Is there a good format to convert it to? It's coming in as an .asf file. I'd like to have it on a smaller file, and also one that will play on WMP -- and VideoStudio if possible.

I have windows 7 pro 64-bit. And no, microsoft doesn't provide a pre-package of codecs for WMP 12, I think it is 12. Which is stupid but that's another thing. I'm open to all suggestions. A different format to convert to? Where to find the codec (and not any virus or malware with it).
thanks in advance,
GMT

I have reinstalled a codec pack. I've re-installed two I have in my downloads. I don't know why it isn't working. Any suggestions?
