VLC 2.2.1 crashes with subtitles - Win XP

If there is a *.srt file in the same directory and with the same base name as a video file, the subtitles appear for some time, but then the video file crashes.
This has occurred with several video files. Several automatic debug reports seemed to have been successfully sent after the crashes.
The subtitle crashes have occurred only since the last one or two updates of VLC.
