Choppy playback in 2.2.1 with WMV files.

Postby SlashThingy » 22 Apr 2015 09:13

The codec is Windows Media Video 9 (WMV3).

There are many messages of "core warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing xx ms)"

I'm having a similar issue. Playback of a WMV file (audio: WMAP, 3F2R/LFE, 48kHz, 32b/sample 128kbps; video: WVC-1 advanced, 640x480, 23.976fps, 1Mbps) is fine with Windows Media Player, but in VLC the log fills with warnings about the picture being too late to be displayed. CPU usage is comparable in both programs at about 3-5%, though VLC uses about twice as much memory (60M versus 30M). The playback in VLC is unusably bad, but the audio is fine.

Things I have tried - changing the output module between Direct3D, DirectX, Direct2D, OpenGL, and automatic, enabling and disabling accelerated video, decorations, and hardware conversions, enabling and disabling deinterlacing, setting file caching to 1000ms, as well as various FFmpeg options (resilience, workaround, skip loop, hardware decoding, threads). No effect. For whatever reason, my VLC install a few days ago played everything fine, and now after upgrading to 2.2.1, wmv files basically don't work.

Ideas?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

I just did the first two minutes of a video, that seemed like it should be enough.

I've also attached a log and sample file, with any luck it's the same issue for both.

This happens only in WMV? Are you sure?

I'll work my way back through the nightlies. The most recent one doesn't even load the vid, it just has this smaller yellow bar bouncing back and forth within the progress bar.

I had a little trouble finding 2.2.2, but I found a version called 3.0.0-git Vetinari, and it's still choppy with WMVs.

EDIT: Problem persists with this version. http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... 0126-0402/

I upgraded from 2.1.4 to 2.2.1 and now I also have the issue discussed here. Disabling "Drop lost frames" reduces the choppy playback and the errors "picture is too late to be displayed" don´t occur then.

I also noticed that not all wmv´s are affected. I have a folder with several similar 1920x1080 wmv´s (WMV9). Many of them work perfect with 2.2.1, but with some the playpack is choppy now. With 2.1.4 all wmv´s played perfect.

I probably should mention, that all my wmvs are created using the Freemake Video Converter. So that could be a factor.

Here is a wmv which is affected of the issue:

http://www.filedropper.com/tgamescom09g ... babesmgthd

I tested with several VLC versions (Windows 7 64-Bit): No problem up to V2.1.5 and no warnings in the messages log. Choppy/stutter since V2.2.0 and also warnings "picture is too late to be displayed" in the messages log (verbosity level 1 or 2).

Hello developers,

can you reproduce/confirm this issue, and will this be fixed in a future release ?

Many thanks for your efforts to develop this great player :)

This is strange because I can reproduce the issue with the wmv I posted above on any windows system. Physical Machines, Virtual Machines, Windows 7, Windows 8, 32-Bit, 64-Bit...

The stuttering is not extreme, but the difference is clearly visible if you compare 2.1.5 (or older) and 2.2.0 (or newer). And the warnings in the message log only appear with 2.2.0 (or newer).

This change was maybe the cause of the issue:
Changes between 2.1.6 and 2.2.0:
...
Demuxer:
...
* Important rework of the ASF/WMV demuxer, notably for seeking,
synchronization and tracks exclusion
...

Thanks for fixing this issue for 2.2.2! :D

I tested with the latest nightly build 2.2.0-20150926-0302 and the affected wmv´s which had issues before seem to work now. But now there are other wmv´s which now have the same issue.

Here is an affected wmv:
http://www.filedropper.com/supermario3

No issues with 2.1.5 or 2.2.1... but now with the fixed 2.2.2. again warnings "picture is too late to be displayed" in the messages log.

I tried again the latest nightly build 2.2.0-20151010-0302 (Win64) but the problem still exists.

JB could you please confirm that this issue is not completely fixed yet ?

Hello Jean-Baptiste,

I think you misunderstood me. The Ticket #15090 was indeed closed on Wed Sep 23 15:53:53 2015 and the affected wmv´s which had issues before work now. But now (with all 2.2.2 builds) other wmv´s (which worked before you fixed it) have the same issue.

For example this video now has the same issue (with all 2.2.2 builds):
http://www.filedropper.com/supermario3
http://www.file-upload.net/download-109 ... 3.wmv.html

So the issue is not completely fixed yet.

Hey,

I can confirm playback issues with .wmv files in 2.2.2. No such issues with same files were on 2.2.1. Win 7.
