Can't stream .mkv files over network

My other PC has a lot of video files. Mostly .mp4 and .mkv. I can stream .mp4 vids over the network very easily. But I can't steam .mkv. It just opens up vlc and nothing happens. It is not about file size either as some of the .mp4s are bigger than the .mkvs that won't run. I don't believe I had this problem in the past. Maybe a recent update did this?

try 2.2 if you aren't using that version yet.

If using VLC 2.2.0 and trying to open or play MKV files within VLC this is a known issue that has been discussed in a bunch other threads since 2.2.0 was released...

The workaround is to use the following nightly build that appears to fix the issue of playing an MKV file within VLC that is stored on the network or on an external drive.

Thanks, nightly did the trick.

Hello to all,

I have the same problem with VLC 2.2.4 (currently the last stable version). Some .mkv files don't play on my CIFS share... instead if i copy the file in local it works... How can i solve this problem? Thank you

Regards

T

I would like to say that I've also tried the vlc nightly version 3.0.0-20160806-0439 and it still doesn't work... :(

P.S. Instead if I use Windows Media Player it works!

Hi, I am getting the following error message while running a video file.

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///F:/Seagate/New%20Folder/KOD/SAS_3043_3219_3291_3487_3406_3473_3339_3341_3436_3129_3422_3452_3105_3024_3181_3230_3123_3156_3190_3508_3052_3091.wmv'. Check the log for details.

Earlier the files used to run, but since I transferred them to a larger storage device I am unable to view them
