FLAC crashes 2.2.0

On a new system 2.2.0 (and 2.1.2) crashes when opening FLAC files that worked on previous versions. Files are located on a local drive.

Any thoughts.

Yes, I can reproduce this.
I have many FLAC files which are crashing VLC 2.2.0 whilst some other ones are playing fine.

Please upload a problematic sample file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) and then post the link to the file here.

I have the same problem. On VLC 2.1.5 FLAC files are played perfectly. WinXP x32 SP3.

Any of you are not on XP?

I can confirm this on Windows 8.1 x64. I'm using the 32 bit version of VLC 2.2.0. I'm having the same problem with FLAC files crashing VLC. I have some FLAC files that play just fine and others that crash VLC.

I've made some tests:

Files encoded with FLAC 1.2.1 crash if encoded with -8 parameter.
Files encoded with FLAC 1.3.1 crash if encoded with -7 or -8 parameter.

Code: Select all

Flac.exe -8 input.wav
The output FLAC files have no tags at all.

Temporary fix:

Replace libflac_plugin.dll from \Plugins\Codec with this one:
http://people.videolan.org/~jb/tmp/libflac_plugin.dll

dimmel said it. If you go to the website and click on the get VLC button it serves you up the 32 bit file. Although this should work it didnt for me.

FIX
uninstall what ever version you have.

Follow the other operating systems link and download the 64 bit version. Install.

Solved all my VLC problems.

Enjoy

Does a bug report (trouble report) need to be opened for the FLAC issue (crashing VLC 2.2.0)? I performed a search but wasn't sure if a bug report had already been opened under some other name. Thank You.

Hello,

I just registered myself 5 minutes ago, because I had the same issue.
I am also using Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit.
Yesterday I downloaded the VLC Player in 32 Bit.
Today I found out, that no .FLAC file was playable.
I downloaded and installed the VLC Player in 64 Bit.
While the installation process the VLC Setup UI asks you to remove all your old data,
so I confirmed to remove all old data and let it finish the installation.
Now everything works fine.

@ Dngnkeeper / Dimmel:
You don't need to remove that stuff yourself. Luckily, like most software, they uninstall their
old data themeselves. The only retard software that needs that self-uninstallin step is Java.

@ Jean-Baptiste Kempf:
Where did you mention that this is the wrong solution and Y?
Everything's workin' now that I have 64 Bit.
The average 64 Bit user should be happy now. :)

Thank You! SYLVERSECOND. That indeed solve my problems.

I'm on Windows 8.1 all updates and fix installed. I've been using the default download version which is the x86.

I can use this media player again for all my music needs in .FLAC of course

Can confirm. Works great after changing to 64-bit version of 2.2.0.
Kudos for finding the temporary solution.

All my .flacs would crash the 32-bit version 1-3 seconds into playing. Album art showed briefly.
