suddenly stopped reading DVDs

i am about halfway through a boxed set (which have all been read perfectly well), and suddenly VLC will no longer play the discs. Not even the discs that it played previously. At first, the problem was the program would not even read the discs at all - when i went to Open Disc, the disk device was completely blank. So i uninstalled, and installed the latest updated version. Now, the program will read the disc - sort of. When I go to Open Disc, i can see the title there. However, when i hit Play, nothing happens. I can hear the disc whirling away in my laptop, but it wont play anything. Any ideas? I cannot think of anything that would have happened on my computer, except recently i had one of those automatic Windows XP upgrades they force on you occasionally. However, this has happened numerous times since i originally downloaded VLC and i never had an issue before, so perhaps this is not it. i just cant think of anything else that is different from a week ago when it was working fine....

any help you can give is much appreciated. sorry if its something simple, I am not terribly tech savvy so i have possibly overlooked something.

I'm also having this issue, I was using 2.1.5 and upgraded to 2.2.0 in the hopes of resolving it - no luck.

I've been having this problem too (Windows-7 desktop pc) - VLC is no longer playing DVDs it's always played.

Resetting preferences achieves exactly nothing.
