I have a WMV file that will play in WMP, but not VLC. I start it with VLC and nothing happens. If I start it and quckily hit pause and look at the codecs, there are a lot of streams audio and video streams.
Audio MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mgpa)
MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv)
28 streams in total.
VLC 2.1.3 Richmond
Windows 7

The solution that was suggested for me was to use VLC 2.0.5. It seems to work on some wmv files.
You could download and use the portable (zip/7z - no install) version to test it out.
