I'm trying to find the source of this problem.

New Zotac GTX760 2GB video card & new BenQ XL 2420TE monitor

The GTX760 is connected to 2 monitors as follows:
1. DVI output from GTX760 to DVI input New BenQ XL 2420TE monitor (res 1920x1080)
2. DVI output from GTX760 thru VGA adapter input to Old Gateway 24" HD Monitor (res 1600x1200)
This means I now have an expanded Window 7 Desktop that spans the 2 monitors.

When I play a video using VLC, and drag VLC from the Old monitor to the New monitor the Video disappears.
Why wont VLC play Video on the new BenQ XL 2420TE monitor?

Its very strange that no video format can be viewed on the BenQ .... AVI nor FLV nor MP4.

Have you tried using the keyboard shortcut to move the active window to the next display? (WIN+SHIFT+Left/Right) I know it's a bit of a long shot, and I believe that this shortcut was introduced with Windows 7 and therefore doesn't work with XP or Vista.
I have had some success using this trick when my attempts to drag a window to another monitor had issues. I do not recall the circumstances so I can not gauge the chances of this being helpful to you. But that shortcut can prove to be extremely useful in a multiple monitor setup since it is global.

It may also be helpful if you provide some more details about your issue... OS version & service pack, VLC version, exactly "how" the video disappears (as you drag it the outline of the window is visible but the window & content/video is transparent? there is NO sign of anything being dragged to the extended monitor? when the window reaches the secondary display the content/video is black (or flickering)? or whatever...) Which monitor is designated as the primary display (should be the one with the taskbar)? Have you tried to use the new monitor for video output using any other players, such as Windows Media Player?

@auralarch, you raise some valid issues. I will explain in more detail.

There is no point in switching monitor identities, because the monitors are not the same type.
NVIDIA has done a masterful job over the last 7 years in managing 2 or 3 monitor setups, using their software. which includes monitor Identity.

The New monitor uses DVI-D port of the GPU card (DVI)
The Old monitor uses DVI-A port of the GPU card. (VGA)

Until I got this new video card and new monitor, I never encountered VLC video no playing on either monitors.
I have always used an extended Desktop, I don't even want to contemplate not working with anything less then 2 monitors.

Actually I never use the Windows Media player its a piece of crap. Never the less I just tried it and it also fails, when I drag a
VLC video from the Old monitor to the New monitor. In fact VLC is a lot faster in recovering which Monitor it will play on.
Usually VLC will quit playing Video after more then 1/2 of the VLC video screen has been dragged over to the New monitor.
It will recover, and play video across both monitors at slightly less than 1/2 way, between the extended desktop, across the 2 monitors. (I hope this makes sense!) The VLC screen goes Black when it reaches the more that 1/2 way dragging point between the 2 monitors.

I don't understand your comment? Dual monitors can be setup 2 ways, extended desktop or identical desktops.

@kimh Wow, that's intense! I haven't ended up using an Nvidia GPU for at least 5+ yrs so I wasn't aware of those rather fundamental differences in the way that the GPU handles video rendering & monitor ID...
But if I'm not mistaken it sounds like you have figured out that your GPU and its drivers/software are really at the heart of your issue as opposed to VLC. That's frustrating but at least you seemed to have solved the question (although that did not resolve your issue unfortunately).

I'm definitely right there with you on the use of multiple monitors- I've had 4 HD displays connected to my main boxes (with KMV-type switching) and 3 to the other one. I get annoyed and feel strained if/whenever I get reduced to 2 for some reason. It would take some major adjustment for me to get used to just having a single monitor again- fortunately there's not really any danger of that happening!
It's really amazing how quickly the technology progressed from 1 GPU being able to support 2 monitors (for a number of years) and very quickly being able to support 4+ displays- and not just on the high-end cards... and I've never even had any hiccups or issues attributed to my GPU which is running 4 separate streams to HD monitors at 1920x1080.
