The audio can't be set to mono

Postby sanon » 01 May 2014 21:57

Hi,

I have got problems with the 3F2R/LFE audio stream of a video while using my headphones or any kind of two channels listening device. The conversations and most of the other sounds are on the right ear all the time which is annoying so I need to set the audio to mono to make it tolerable.

What I've tried so far with no successful results is this:
Under Advanced Preferences >> Audio >> Filters, I have checked the "Audio filter for stereo to mono conversion" option.
Under Advanced Preferences >> Audio >> Filters >> Mono, I have set "the channel to keep" option to "right".
Under Advanced Preferences >> Audio >> Output Modules, I have changed the "audio output module" option from "Automatic" to DirectX.

I am using VLC 2.1.4 on Win7 64bit.

Any ideas how to overcome this problem?

Thanks...

PS: I was able to make the same adjustment with two other players (GOM and PotPlayer) successfully...

It should be obvious but the "stereo to mono conversion" does not work with surround audio streams.

Hi Rémi,
I don't think it's so obvious for two reasons.
In this context any stream superior to mono can be interpreted as "stereo" because also a surround stream is actually a more sophisticated stereo stream that gives different sounds to the left and to the right.
Secondly, under Advanced Preferences >> Audio >> Filters >> Mono >> "Audio filter for stereo to mono conversion" in the dropdown menu for "Select channel to keep" one can see not just the left and the right channels but also other channels that are ordinarily to find in a surround system.

From the dictionary, stereo: "A system of recording or reproducing sound that uses two channels" (emphasis added).

Besides, the plugin name would not explicitly mention "stereo" if it accepted any number of channels. That would be totally redundant if not counter-sensical.

:)
If so why this then?
"Secondly, under Advanced Preferences >> Audio >> Filters >> Mono >> "Audio filter for stereo to mono conversion" in the dropdown menu for "Select channel to keep" one can see not just the left and the right channels but also other channels as "rear left", "rear right", "rear center" that are ordinarily to find in a surround system as opposed to the explicit emphasis of the plugin on "stereo."

And independent from this discussion on wording I wonder if it would be anytime possible to convert surround sound to mono on VLC really?

Thanks...
