Plz Help - VLC stops playing a few sec or min after starting

I have a bunch of video files that stop playing only a few seconds after starting. Some will go a little over a minute but thats it.
The files are in .mkv format, but I have other .mkv files that play fine. I can't figure out why these particular ones won't play all the way. It took me forever to get the whole season of this show to download, and now I"m going nuts not being able to watch it.
Anyone know what could be the problem? I'd be so grateful for any help.

I'm sure someone has asked this question before. But I promise I did a search to see if I could find an answer on the forum before asking. I've done multiple searches on here as well as google searches. And spent 2 days reading through everything i could find. But I can't figure out why this is happening on only a handful of files.
Maybe someone could just tell me where I should look or research to find a fix, instead of having to take the time to write out what I should do. I don't want to put anyone out or waste someones time, but I don't know where else to look or who else to ask. Please pleeeeease help me if you can.

Are you able to play the file with any other program (MediaMonkey, Windows Media Player, ...). Perhaps your file did not download properly. Try redownloading one of the (smaller) files under a new name and compare the sizes of the first and the new files. If the sizes don't match exactly, one or both files is corrupt...

I worked for a few hours last night to try to get them to play on Win Media Player. I had to download diff codecs, filters, ect. I have no idea what they do. I WAS able to finally get it to play and continue playing with WMP...but with no sound lol
I was going to try to figure out how to get the audio to work on it tonight. But I'll see if I can try what you said about re-downloading one of the files again with a diff name and see how they compare.
Thank you soooooo much for responding. I know there are tons of posts on here, and they can't alll be answered. So thank you very much for taking the time
