Cannot change subtitle size or font

I'm using Windows 7, VLC 2.1.0, and no matter what I do I can't seem to get the text size or the font to change (I've tried the "smaller-small-normal" option, and the pixel size option in the advanced "text renderer" tab).
Might this be because of how some subtitles are coded or because of the filetype? I am playing mkv videos. Is there a solution?
