Vertical yellow bar down the center of the picture.

I just updated my friend's version of VLC to 2.1.2 on his DELL Inspiron B130 laptop running XP Home, SP3.
The previous version of VLC was working great. However, I don't know what version that was. Unfortunately I didn't think to check that before updating.
Now there's this annoying, transparent, vertical, yellow bar in the center of the picture. I've tried playing several different commercial DVDs, and I restarted the computer, as well, but the bar is still there.
Then I tried going back a few versions of VLC. First 2.1.1 = same thing. Then 2.1.0 = no change.
I'm not stupid, but I'm no tech genius, either. So, whoever knows the solution to this, please put it in terms that I can understand especially since I'm not all that familiar with PCs; I'm a Mac user.
Much appreciation!
